    How Long?

Run angus and polled hereford bulls. I am lucky if I keep an angus bull until he is 6 years of age due to injury or just getting plain awnry. Herford bulls on the other hand regularly hang around until 8 or 9 years of age.

    Montana or Louisiana?

RnR, I'm a Montanan born and raised in the eastern part of the state. I can tell you that if you realistically want to ranch in Montana it will have to be the eastern part. If you are wanting mountains as a backdrop that land is flat out impossible to pencil out running cows or farming. Here...

    What to do?

On small acreage I wouldn't use the lick tubs. I've used them in the corral with a few dry cows and they just camped around them and ate them way too fast. At least with range cubes you can control the consumption.

AI for the rich and famous!!

I dont know SRR, the last bull sale I went to I came home $15000 poorer and only had 5 bulls to show for it. That's not exactly my idea of fun, except for the open bar after the sale, that was fun. But your right it is a nice time to bs with other guys that I only see a handful of times a year.

AI for the rich and famous!!

I AI around 200 a year. I AI my heifers and coming 3's. The reason I do this is to improve and keep good females in the herd. It might not be all that profitable when the pencil is put to it but being able to produce good females is hard to put a dollar amount on. And I also do it all myself...

Best season for calves be born

In the harsh Eastern Montana climate I like to start the first of April and end about the middle of May. Too much danged work calving in Feb. and the early to middle part of March. Although we usually always get a bad storm around the 20th of April, but it never gets real cold. It seems that...

    northern calving temp?

I calve my older cows out starting the first of April. I got tired of fighting mother nature. To be truthful it really hasnt hurt my weaning weights since I only kick the bulls out for 45 days so basically the last calf is born May 15 therefore the calves are pretty darn uniform. As for the...

Cattle producers' views of each other

Most small to moderate scale(0-1000 head) cattleman get along quite well. They know they are of slight competition to each other but love the commradery and friendship that goes along with being in the same line of work as others. It tends to be though that very very large corporate operations...

Where do you sell most of your animals?

I contract mine in early summer. It is nice to be able to have some control over the price, where going to the sale barn it is possible to take a real hosin. If you get up to 75 calves you could possibly contract a smaller potload depending on the weight. Another thing is find a neighbor that...

Buying a bull at the sale yard

I would advise you to be very careful about buying a bull at the sales yard. More often than not you will get into some serious trouble. 99% of people who sell a bull at the sales yard do it for a reason, my thinking is if it isnt good enough for them to keep why would I want it. A guy in this...

    Using different breed bulls

The only problem I can see with that is that the charolais calves are most likely gonna be bigger therefore making your calves a tad more uneven.

    Cross fencing bad?

That old cattleman speaks a little truth in that statement but not much. Crossfencing is a proven practice, there is absolutely no way to better utilize all your grass than with a fenceline. The only thing I can imagine he is thinking is overcrowding cattle during calving, troubles can be had...

    Fast Money

The easiest money I ever made was off of short term cows. About 4 or 5 years ago I bought some short termers for $450 in December. I calved them out in March and pulled the calves off of them in the spring. I sold the calves for $250 and the cows I pounded them out for the same money as I bought...

what would u cross an angus with?

Big red-necked hereford bulls on my moderate framed angus cows. I have always been partial and never used anything but british genetics. I love them big soggy black baldie and brockle faced calves, I think there will always be a demand for them. I think it is somewhat important to use a hereford...

    Need some horse advice.

Bob, I would not worry about them two horses. As long as they have enough to eat and a constant water supply they will be fine. Two horses together keep each other occupied plumb fine, I would worry a little if it was only one horse. The string of horses I dont ride often or are getting...

What do you folks recommend for...

Them experts also noted that if it was possible to switch calving pastures periodically that would be a very good idea. It doesn't give scours a chance to get started in the soil.

    Your favorite fence

Three wire barbed wire fence. Less maintenance and them damn antelope can go through them without breakin the bottom wire.

What do you folks recommend for...

Just got home from an afternoon Montana State Extension beef cow meeting. Jon Patterson and a few DVM's from Montana and North Dakota hit on that very subject. According to them it is a waste of time and money. Kind of a nice change of pace to hear from someone who isn't trying to push a certain...

How do I milk a cow?

If you have too much trouble with the old girl a little sedative by the name of "Promace" can be quite helpful and may save you from a broken arm or a lost temper.

    Heifer's first calf

It depends on if she was AI'd or not. Alot of the knowledgeable breeders claim the best way to improve your herd is through a heifer AI program.
