    Cattle Ponds

I have 3 man-made stock tanks on my place, but also I have the big galzanized(sp) Tank for them in the pen with one of those cheezy heater things for winter. Its a redneck hot tub :) It dont freeze enough to walk on water here, so I cant help ya there.

    CHIGGERS

I spewed Diet Coke™ on my monitor when I saw this topic. The reason is... This weekend I went to do a "Quckie check" on the cows wearing my short pants and tennie boppers. Bad move there Maverick  Now my ankles are circled in chigger bites. I put fingernail polish on them, but...

    Thorn Trees

If I had trees like the one in the pic above, I'll tell ya how I would remedy it.... Move where they dont have those :) Seriously, I have been clearing mesquites off an unused part of my land for the past 4 years. I just jerk them out with the tractor and spray diesel fuel on any roots that...

    Magnets

When we bought our place 10 years ago it was covered in sandstone rocks. While clearing it with a truck, trailer, 1 sore back and 30 pairs of leather gloves... I hung a 6 foot long magnetic strip from the front bumper about 2 inches off the ground. It picked up a lot of "Bits N Pieces" of...

    Cows per Acreage

In my neck of the woods its about 1 cow per 2 acres. But most of my chunk of Heaven is covered with Coastal Bermuda so i'm gonna try for 1.25 cows per 2 acres. (soon as I figure out the .25 part)

have you ever seen this before?

We got over 2" over the weekend :) FINALLY! It was so bad if you dropped a wrench working on your tractor and it fell in a suncrack it was a goner :) Actually soaked enough to get some runoff in the tanks :) Downside: I had to help the wife to "Spring Cleaning®" for 3 days

    Penning cattle with ATV's

I agree with a lot of the others too :) I shake a feed sack and here they come. Then close the gate. I do have a rope on the gunrack in my Pickup... but its for show :cboy:

    Adjusting Headgate

Thanks for the replys :) I like Jt's last line "I just do what ever it takes" thats kinda the way I look at things most times. And Sid, I like the horns and do plan on traning them down. To me, Herefords look "Funky" without horns :) I dont want no funky cows ! PS: No... not Tarleton.. I...

    Adjusting Headgate

Mine are only 9 month old Herefords, and the horns are only about 8 inches long (each) but there is a lot of cow in the middle :) So, do you just run them in with the doors closed, and squeeze them? or open the door once they are in and let them poke thier head out?

    Branding Vs. Not Branding

Not trying to highjack the thread, but I have to ask. How do you know how long to leave the iron on them? I asked the "Old timers" and all I get is.. "yo'll know" or "It depends". Now remember im a newbie, and its my job to ask stupid questions :P but I aint skeered to try almost anything...

    Adjusting Headgate

Susie, Dont feel like the Lone Ranger :) I just got my squeeze chute a week ago and still have yet to use it. I too had similar concerns about setting the width for the auto catch headgate. I had nightmares of having to take a chainsaw to get a cow out  My herd (both cows :) ) have...
  16. Plowboy_TX

Not neccessarrily a cow question but..........

An "Old Timers" trick is put crushed walnut husks in a toesack. Tie a brick to it and sink it in the stock tank (pond). Be careful not to use too much because it also take the oxygen out of the water, and it will kill your catfish. Our small tanks (approx 200'diameter) we used 1/4 of a sack of...

    Cattle naming?

My first 2 Hereford cows: Mary Lou (after my first ex-mother-in-law) Barbara Anne (After my sister-in-law) I think the therapy is starting to work now, so my next cows might have a little less passive aggressive names :P For real, they are #DW001-ml and #DW002-ba just to have a "Part...

    Automatic Headgate?

Thanks for the info y'all :) I ended buying a Powder River XL, and my neighbor thats an "Old school" rancher and loves nothing more than a chance to poke fun at the "greenhorn" (that would be me :p ) came over with his big John Deere and unloaded the chute, and helped me set it in place and...

    Automatic Headgate?

First off, Im the biggest newbie in the whole of Palo Pinto County so laugh if you will, but im willing to learn anything :) I'm looking at buying a Powder River Value I™ squeeze chute. It say its headgate is "Auto catching". How does it "catch" them? Do you need someone at the chute controls...
