I guess I give people too much credit

Talk about the CAB getting ridiculous. Saw in the store the other day a can of Alpo dog food with an official looking seal on it which said 100% Angus Beef. I'm sure the old hounds out there can tell the difference. (didn't have phone with me to snap a pic).

    cow efficiency

To a large extent most producers are already indirectly selecting for cow feed efficieny by selecting for milking ability and mature weight. Milking ability directly correlates to lbs. of calf weaned, and mature body weight directly correlates to lbs. of dry matter consumed. The real question...

    Cattle software

IMO Cattle Max is not really what I would call a cattle management software program. It is just an extensive, pre-configured, Microsoft Access database. Since I already have Microsoft Access, I'm trying develop a similar database just for my own use, with only what I need. I might add, I have...

    Goals

I have often wondered this of the people that, "know the difference." How much of that knowledge is a real difference and how much is a percieved difference caused by physiological factors? I don't know. What I mean is, freezer beef customers usally have a vested interest earlier in the...

Can AI breed out libido? A story of two bulls.

Didn't mean to imply you didn't know. Just the opposite, I infered you were posing the question for the OP to ask himself and consider. I was simply tring to re-enforce your comment for the OP, since to me it is the most obvious answer to his problem, and it hadn't been mentioned thru 2 pages...

Can AI breed out libido? A story of two bulls.

Not only possible but this is probably what happened. Bulls in multiple sire herds will estabish a pecking order for breeding, especially if you have bulls of different ages and/or from different sources. I have seen several studies on this done where thru DNA testing of calves it has been...

Optimum age to breed heifers ??

I will add to that with a body condition score of 5-6. Age is just one factor in having the right type of heifers. IMO, the ideal replacement heifer ready for breeding would be the type that weighs 800-900 lbs, frame score 5.5-6.0, BCS 5-6, 15 months of age, and calves unasisted at 24 months.

    What Breed

Being a little farther North, I would love to have a cow herd of 1/4 Gert x 1/4 Hereford x 1/2 Gelbvieh bred to Angus or Charlois Bulls. I dought one would ever find females bred like this for purchase. If I was in your area or anywhere in the deep South/Gulf Coast, I'd go with your choice.

Antibiotics in feed, in the news

Surely I am not the only one that sees the more troubling issue here. Another example of a federal judge directing public policy from the bench. This is a matter for Congress and/or the President to address thru legislation and/or regulation, not a matter for a judge to determine. I always...

    Most durable ear tags

It was more of an unforseen benefit using insecticide tags. Put them in the right ear normally then put them on the back of the left ear so it didn't cover the numbered tag. Had a lot of insecticide tags lost out of the right ears and none lost in the left ears. Started doing all tagging that...

    Seedstock?

A turer statment has never been made!

    Most durable ear tags

I discovered with the button type, if you put the button on the inside of the ear and the tag hanging from outside on the back of the ear, they stay in better. It's a lot harder for a cow to snag the back of her ear than something hanging in front.

    How much mineral access?

I always figured one mineral feeder per every 30 head or so. You should be fine with only 16 head. There is a big difference between a true mineral block and a red trace mineralized salt block. Altough I have not looked for them in recent years, there were some mineral companies that made...

    weaning calves

This is my method and works very well for me. Prior to weaning: - All vaccinations and boosters properly givin. - About 7-10 days prior, start creep feeding a recieving/weaning ration medicated with AS-700 so they are used to feed and have a level of medication in their bloodstreams. Weaning...

    board walk

AGREE!!!! I used old brick once as a base. Worked great. Also get the water away from the shed. Perhaps a gutter on the roof, and if on a slope maybe a terrace uphill diverting the runoff away from the shed.

    sale barn vs private treaty

I pay the same, but the seller makes more money because they don't have to pay the sale barn fees, hauling expenses, and they assume very little risk. I will pay more if the seller has a very good set of cows, provides history, health & production records, and if I think the seller has options...

    Good cattle books

I second that! I have found the cooperative extension service to be a valueble resourse. They have a lot of pratical info available in print and online that you can get at the county offices or on their websites. The best part is it's FREE. Start out with the site for your state and nearby...

    200 cows about 1/2 grangus 1/2 Angus

Selling feeder calves: With 200 head you are right on the edge of whether you could sell full truckloads off the farm. 300 head would be better. Full truckload is about 85 - @600#, all of the same sex, frame, type, condition, and weight within 50#. Would be hard to get 85 like that from 100...

    Retirement Ranch Location

Last week I Found myself having to drive from Kansas City to New Orleans. Took US Hwy 65 from KC through Little Rock to NE LA, I-20 to Jackson, MS, I-55 to the Big Easy. What a beautiful drive through the heart of the Ozarks. Decided then if circumstances allow I will retire to a ranch in...
