How's my corral plan from complete greeny?

Lots of good features in the plan, but I still would lengthen the chute(race) by at least 8 feet + build in a palpation cage right behind the squeeze. And I'd probably lengthen all the holding pens by the same amount and make them that much larger if you're looking at putting 25 head in them...

How's my corral plan from complete greeny?

The main thing that I see is that I would move those gates that are in/out of your holding pens from the center of the pen to one corner or the other and make the gates the same size as the width of your alleyway.

Atten TX & OK drought survivors - HELP!

Sorry to hear that you're going through this. We've been fortunate here this year, but with these 100+ temps that we're getting right now, we could be getting in bad shape again really quickly. My strategy last year was to sell the bottom third of the herd. I started feeding early to stretch...

Does every herd have a boss cow?

Like you, most of my "lead" cows are not the boss cows. Also, in my herd, many times there is not a single boss cow in a pasture, but it ends up in a round-robin situation where dominant cow(#1) runs another dominant cow (#2), then dominant cow (#2) runs another dominant cow (#3), but dominant...

    Scroote

I can honestly say that Knersie has probably done more to "adjust" my thinking about my own breeding program, along with my "education" on what constitutes practical cattle than anyone else I know - and he has managed to do all of that from a different continent, without a phone call. So, for...

I don't know, Knersie, the word around is that you're a REALLY B-A-A-A-A-A-A-D-D-D MAN! :hide: :hide: :hide: :cboy:

    Scroote

That thought had crossed my mind, too, Knersie! I had actually come to enjoy some of Scroote's posts. Beyond those jabs at you and three way, whom I like, and Doc, whom I don't care much at all for, there seemed to be some basis of knowledge behind his posts - with the added wit and sarcasm...

    What happens when...

Contrary to what some others are saying, there is a breed of cattle called Black Herefords. They have their own registry, a separate entity from the AHA, with their own rules for entry into the registry. Black Angus cattle were initially used to fix the black color and now a breeding up...

    Manpower vs. womanpower

That's because Mr. Mehoff's ID and posts have now been obliterated by "The Force" and they have disappeared into cyberspace never to return - at least until the next incarnation appears! :tiphat: George

    Hereford Bull Question

While those EPDs themselves wouldn't necessarily scare me, when using an unproven bull on mature cows, even smaller ones like yours, the fact that he had a BW ratio of 113% would! And his updated EPDs are CE of -3.1% and a BW of +5.5. George

Can I make a living off of cattle

No, what I'm saying is how much you can make is probably related to how much money you have to invest. And trying to make a living with borrowed money is going to make it much harder. If you have no money - and are planning on using borrowed money, I'm going to give you much different advice...

Can I make a living off of cattle

My question was a serious one! How much money do you have to invest? Look at it this way. If you clear $100 a calf from a cow/calf operation, you would need 220 cows to clear $20,000 a year, assuming a 90% calf crop. Is $20,000 a year a living? :?:

    Hereford information or misinformation

Beverly is usually reliable, so I 'm probably the one who's wrong. And that certainly gives me something to think about regarding my own situation. I was planning on enrolling my herd in TPR this year. Now I'm wondering if that's going to be possible. George

    Hereford information or misinformation

Ruark, as a new breeder, I would tell you to join the AHA and also participate in the TPR program - if you a desire to sell and market registered Hereford cattle. This thread should be testimony to anyone starting out in the business that is the prudent thing to do. George

    Hereford information or misinformation

I can remember an old fella by the name of Barney Carter. He was in his 80s when I met him and I was 14. He was selling out his herd of registered Herefords - which the dispersion lasted several days and numbered close to 1000 lots. But you could mention one of his cows to him, at random, and...
