    branding required for bank financing??

I was looking into doing a loan on some cattle a few years ago and one of the bankers I was dealing with wanted me to go get a new brand to use on the cattle, with the banks name on the brand also. I am pretty sure you can figure out where I told him to go. I have always paid cash for...

    udder evaluation???

I try to do them when they calve. I have a hard time determining real well what a heifers udder will be like when they come into production. I look for levelness, and teat placement on weaner calves, but still hard to tell for me.

Lost a calf, teats too big?

I've had a few get teats like that after two or three calves. It's funny how it just shows up. I have kept a couple heifers out of those cows from before the teats got big and I have had no problem with them and they are going onto their 5th calf this spring. Might not be what CB would have...

Tips for building using HT electric?

We run lost of cattle on 1 to 2 strands of wire for our boundary fence, even along roads. Calves stay in and as long as there is grass, so will the cows. 6 to 8 strands is overkill.

Help with a Gallagher Electric Fencer?

I had a plug in one go bad on me last year and sent it in and they put a new circuit board in and sent it back. Not under warranty, and they still didn't charge anything for it.

Help with a Gallagher Electric Fencer?

HAve you set it out to solar charge without the power turned on? Some solar chargers wear out if they aren't allowed to "charge" up without the power on.

    Info at sale barn

We leave information on vaccinations and ages on any bred (or supposed to be bred) cows we sell. We have also started to do it on anything we sell. Last fall we actually got a higher price for some bred cows we sold (in my way of thinking) because we were able to give the information to the...

    clipping sale cattle

What kind of sale is it? If it's a registered sale, I would get them clipped like you are going to a show. Torching (propane torch) them doesn't look real good on Herefords, you can do it, just don't torch the white. You can burn down the tops and shoulders, but hitting any white makes them...

    Head gate-chute

Just make sure you make your alley way narrow enough. 28 to 32 inches I think is all you want. We have a headgate we use on panels over where we run our replacements. In the spring, they are small enough that the panels are not close enough due to how they hook to the headgate, which can make...

    Antibiotics?

The "natural" grassfed program we have been selling our calves to the last two years, do not take the ones that have had antibiotics. They make us sign an affidative stating that they have not had antibiotics, the ones that have been treated, we sell another way. Which is a pain in the butt...

    Hoof Tape vs Scale

One thing to consider is that there is a 5 to 7 # diif on bull calves with the tape. I have one and it says there is a +/- between steers and heifers. They are convenient, but I still use a cotton scale to weigh to be sure. Even thouse get inaccurate. 2 to 5 lbs doesn't make a big difference...

Tip for newbie cab tractor drivers...

Its no fun eing locked in the cab. I had it happen once when the AC went out. Good thing I'm small because I took the hinges off the back window and was able to crawl out!!

    land for lease?

Word of mouth is the best way. Or if you see a piece you think you would like to get, find out who owns it. If they aren't using it and nobody else is, make an offer. Land around here is getting scarce, we are looking every year for something new.

has anyone used a tool called a "calf catch"

It has a hook on the end of it so you can catch one of the hind legs of the calf to get ahold of it. They are somewahat handy. We don't have one but I have used them at other places. Theyre real good at making the calf bawl and have the cow come back. On the ones that are grouchy at birth...

    Calving by almanac

285 days after she's been bred  I don't rely on the almighty almanac to schedule my life though.

    shots for newborns

We give 8 way and Mu-Se or Bo-Se at birth when we process the calf. We're in an area where cattle on contracted to graze crop residues, so in the fall the county's population goes from a couple thousand to probably ten or more thousand. With all the rotation of cattle on circles, theres bound...

    Pink milk?

It is probably that color from the carotene in the carrots. Somehow it probably just passed the color into the milk.

    snow/hay

I wouldn't get too excited if they can still get through the snow and there is forage unde it. Cows aren't like horses, they will dig through the snow to get to the grass.

    Increasing AI success

Timed AI is for convenience. That cuts thru all the BS. The best way to AI cows is am/pm rule or 12 hours after you see standing heat. Timed AI allows you to throw a hail mary at your cows. With any synch program, the best way to get cows bred is to heat detect. All the companies are...

    Gravel vs. Cow's feet ?

My biggest concern would be that they get a little tender fotted from walking on the gravel. Other than that you shouldn't have problems. They can usually get rocks out from between their hooves just by walking around.
