    Calf-Guard

We also stopped having scour troubles when we started using calf guard (oral to calves) and vaccinating them after all have calved and calves are at least one week old with MLV same as they will get at weaning. Blessings Valerie

    Bottle calf bloating

A neighbor feeds his clean bright straw when they bloat, he swears by it. We've never tried it although hubby has heard of it from long ago! Blessings Valerie

    immobilize calf w/broken leg?

Theonly one we had was a heifer calf had broke her leg it just dangled. Vet wanted us to load her and bring her in but we were afraid it would cause more damage by stressing her ( taking away from familiar surroundings and her mom) so we put her and her dam in a pen by themselves. Calf had...

Momma died and left 6-7 week old calf who is very weak.

How's the calf? We had a blind bull calf we had bought from a dairy, years ago, we gave shots of Vitamin A, E and I've forgotten what else and how much. Some shots were daily and some were every other day. Doc said he had a virus or something in his brain? Anyway, after a week or so, he got his...

Momma died and left 6-7 week old calf who is very weak.

This may sound silly, but, are you sure he can "see"? It may be that the calf is blind or partially blind, that would explain getting out of the pasture and away from the herd. Blessings Valerie

Momma died and left 6-7 week old calf who is very weak.

If you tube him - which I wouldn't do unless you can't get him to suck enough thru a bottle - make sure you can feel the "ball" end in his throat as you push it to his stomach.. if you can't feel it you are probably getting it in the wrong place. Vet has me push it along one side instead of down...

    Bull Proof Mineral feeder?

Neighbor lady has some of those made from oak. Bulls still play wit hthem and turn them over and push them around. They don;t break them, just rearrange them and dump the minerals[/quote We made ours out of oak also, yep... bulls turn them over and too heavy for me to turn back over. They...

    Need a suggestion.

We give Calf Guard as well.... no scour problems since ..except for possible milk scoots from rich milking moms. No antibiotics are given with vaccines unless absolutely necessary. (Was told antibiotics given with vaccines was detrimental to the vaccines affects) Valerie

    needle size

Doc does the vaccinations and don't know what size he uses. I use 20g x 1/2" for everything I give, which isn't much lol Valerie

    Brown fat in calves

Where did you get the coat for the calf? I've thought about making some for the Jersey heifers if the winter gets too much colder. So far, they are handling it well. Valerie

U.S. FDA prohibits cephalosporins in animals

It won't affect us either. We use yeast in the feed , and only use antibiotics when absolutely necessary... I dont'even give it for calf scours unless I know for sure the scours are not caused by too much milk or feed (we start creep as soon as they can nibble) or from vaccine. Valerie

    Bottle Calf Concerns

It's amazing how ignorance can "sometimes" be OK LOL Valerie. PS. Would the fact we acquired the heifers at around 3 weeks of age, and a few weeks later we were giving the water bottles - it was hot outside and they were not drinking enough water so we gave it to them in the bottles - make a...

    Bottle Calf Concerns

Allison, If I'm reading this correctly http://www.heifermax.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/rumen-development1.pdf the water does not enter the abomosum and is essential in the development of the rumen. Where I gave the heifers water, after their milk bottles, I conclude from this pdf that...

Alison, at what age does the water bypass the abomasum? Valerie

    Bottle Calf Concerns

I didn't know this. We gave our Jersey heifer calves 2 quarts of milk replacer followed by 2 quarts warm water bottle. Never had a bit of trouble or scours. Valerie

    Nasel Vac ?

Our vet gives a nasal vaccine but I don't know what brand. He's been giving it the last several years.. even the jersey heifers are doing quite well in the cold and rain with no building - just a tarp - and have not gotten sick. They get their 3rd dose this week (we vaccinate at a few weeks old...
