    Totally useless terms

Oh Boy...now here is a better cow....as opposed to the one that he just sold that was the better cow than the one before that. Didn't like either one. "Fancy calves" is another term that I always get a chuckle out of..just black to what I've seen. They never call my herfs fancy. DMc

    stolen cattle

Back a few years, quite a few, when I lived outside of Globe, AZ the bad hombreys were using refigerated trucks and slaughtering upwards of 25 head a night and leaving the hides in the wash where the deed was done. A fella would think that someone would be suspicious of rigs like that driving...

What would you " pop" these two bulls with?

If it really worries you...3cc Se&E, 5cc A&D, 5cc B-complex or follow the label directions. If they were mine I'd leave them alone, we have great alfalfa, good water and free choice minerals with Se added. DMc

    horns vs. no horns?

Have one horned herf on the place...have a agreement with her...use the horns, loose the horns. She is ready to wean her third calf and still haven't had a problem. That sweet Lim bull that we had stuck horns on three calves this year and I expect we'll see the same on next year's crop. Calves...

    Older calf and diarrhea...help

First of all...the condition of the stool needs to be defined here, clear or lightly tinted, foul smelling, off color, forms a patty on the ground, any sign of blood, mucus, alot of factors that all could be normal or could be a indicator to take quick action. Change of feed can cause calf...

    Cattle Eyes. . . Question-*NEW PICS*

Take another picture when the cow is looking straight ahead. Funny how a cow can see all the way to it's rump without turning it's head, nice feature but I wouldn't want to have a gal pal with eyes set like that. DMc

    Plants Poisonous to Cattle?

I'd give a call to the local extention agent...up here we have a weed control board that visits the folks that have noxious weeds and issues warnings...they also publish some nice pamplets with color pictures and reccomendations on eradicating the offending plants. DMC

    Large calf won't suck

We give Selinium & E and A&D at birth. Tube colostrum if not nursing. Did you try working the calf's mouth with your finger with some of mama's milk on it, sometimes that will get the sucking response started. Good luck....DMc

    Warts on calf's head

We have a calf with those nasty things...one on each side of her head, kind of on the top front part of the forehead. Oh wait...her mama has them too...guess they came from the Limousin side of the fence. DMc

    Retained Placenta

We had two heifers calve within a week of each other and both hung on to the plancentas. Talked with our vet about it and he was prety sure that it was a A & D defieiency. Both cleaned at eight days all by themselves with no problems, Temps were normal and they are good mamas. Back when I wore...

    Feeding bread to cattle

Up here the local bakery will deliver the scraps to your farm for $60.00/ton in dumptsters. Bought a big (1275#) bread fed steer from a fella a few years back just to try it out...never again. The carcass looked nasty, about 1" of back fat and handfulls of KPH...all the fat was white as snow and...

    strange thing happened

Mud is not good in a wound. When we treat for foot rot, we scrub the whole hoof with idonine solution apply a antibiotic salve then bandage the foot...then wrap it with duct tape to form a water proof barrier. The wound should be healed by the time the duct tape wears off. We keep the animal in...

    Please Help

Hard to tell by description, you could have a parasite. Take a scraping to your vet for a look see. Athlete's foot meds work well on ringworm. DMC

    Pine Trees

We aborted three this past Sept when a wind storm brought down some pine branches...one five month and two three month bred cows. Some cows just get a taste for pine needles and will eat them no matter how good the feed is while their herd mates ignore them. Takes about 72 hours after eating...

    Heifer to butcher?

Hey...yellow fat is a good thing. The yellow fat indicates a high level of Beta Carotene in the animal's diet...grass fed. Slaughtered a nice open three year old Herf this past spring and she was some of the best eating that Ican remember. Just my two bits wowrth....asked for or not, DMc

should i do more to fix

What I have found to work well with hoof rot is to get the animal in the chute and secure the hoof and scrub it well with beta dyne to remove all signs of infection and dirt from the entire hoof. We put a antibiotic slave in the wound and bandage the hoof then wrap the whole thing with duct tape...

    mineral supplements

Our calves start munching alfalfa as soon as they watch their mothers eat, usualy about three days old and spend alot of time chewing a stem...fun to watch. Dmc

If you are sure it is pinkeye, LA 200. When it is dry and the eyes are watering I like to flush them with common saline eye wash and check the eye closely before admistering the antibiotic. DMc
