Is the halter rubbing up close under her eye? I had some steers that I halter broke about a month ago and had one get an eye like that. I just put some terramycin ointment in it for a couple of days and it helped, cleared it up. You could squirt peniccilin in it a couple times a day and see...
If the drug is labeled to be given at that, why are you worried? LA-200 is labeled at 4.5cc per 100, and thats how you dose it, right? Why treat the animal twice if you can get it done in one whack?
I would get a mix of 60% corn 40% barley, forget the molasses and throw in a 32% CP pellet. I get that exact mix for about $200 a ton.
I usually do the same thing you are talking about. I'll run my butcher calves out with the replacement heifers all summer until the first of August, get...
There's a guy east of here that finishes holsteins and he feeds pretty much just rolled corn. I'd probably feed them at least 90 days just to get some flavor in them.
Probably start them of at 6 pounds/head/day. You might weigh it to be sure, but a coffee can holds about three +or- pounds...
We used the Ocu-Guard vaccine from Boeringer-Ingelheim this spring, but a vaccine is not a cure all for pinkeye. Most of the cases I had this summer were mild, but had 3 that got real bad and annoying.
I use Bio-Mycin 200, then put a little dab of terramycin ointment in the eye and patch if...
That's the easiest way to do it. The cost of the gun is high, but after 20 head it pays for itself.
Disposable needles are what, $0.20 each, they are cheap and easy to dispose of. And you don't get anything going back in the bottle.
We also have a couple guns that draw off the bottle through...
Why are you using a new syringe for each cow?
Buy a multiple dose vaccine gun, fill it up, administer to each animal until the syringe is empty, replace needle with a new one, draw vaccine, repeat until cows are all done.
It's not rocket science.
I think Cydectin in the spring works pretty good. I sure don't promote using it in the fall though. Also Cydectin's claim to fame is it doesn't kill dung beetles, if that matters to you. I usually harrow my irrigated pastures so I dont care if there are any dung beetles.
WHat was your reasoning for giving the 2nd calf 5 cc of BoSe? I thought it was only labeled for about 3 cc at birth?
See, we give Mu-Se, thats why I ask. We are in a very Se deficient area, but calves get 1 cc Mu-Se at birth, and then they never get it again unless they are a replacement, and...
Just depends on your area. In areas where ther are alot of cattle there usually enough cow vets, it's just sorting out the ones that know what you expect from them.
Also, more and more cattleman are training them selves or workers to do what the vet does. About the only thing I dont feel...
Free choice without a limiter is the way to go. Why use a limiter, if they need the mineral let them eat it. 3 oz is not very much. If you think they are eating too much for your pocket book, take it away, OR put salt out in a seperate feeder. Cattle need the mineral, you dont do any good by...
I wondered if Cydectin was bad about it too. Last winter we used cydectin on half the cows and they seemed like they got lice first.
I dont know how everyone feels about it, but I checked the cows real hard the other day after I made my post about Eprinex. I don't think we have anything with...
Any of the products you use don't have a very effective life. Most are good for up to like 45 or 60 days. It doesn't suprise me one bit that they are getting lice. It's mostly a time of year thing.
We used Eprinex this fall, before it froze, and we just maybe getting lice now. It's just the...
It's mainly because cattle don't have alot going on in their lives. They get excited at anything new.
Sometimes our cattle get real annoyed and excited when they wont all go into the corral. I am pretty sure its the words coming out of my mouth and the dogs biting their heels and noses!!!!
The best way is to get together with your vet, get the cattle in and take random blood samples. Run them through however you want, but I think you would want to test about 25% of the amount of head you have. Try not to use ones that have been doctored, or if you do, only use a couple of them.
