    Calf ?

This is a not very scientific WAG, but with the dead smell and dropping temp after the high temp and infection, and the cold to the touch it almost sounds like some form of sepsis or blood poisoning. He's sure lasted a long time if that's what it is though. I would have expected him to have quit...

    Pole Syringe

Spend a few dollars more and get a good one. Ask your vet what kind he has. I bought a cheaper one, thinking I wouldn't use it very often, and I've never been happy with it. If you don't hit it straight enough it will bind. The ones the vets carry work a lot smoother. It takes a little practice...

    Mannan oligosacchiarides

It's oligosaccharide. I would guess all of the major feed companies would have it available- though maybe not in stock at the feed store. It's a carb that comes from the outer cell wall of yeast I think. Supposed to bind up the bad pathogens in the digestive tract and allow them to pass instead...

    Heavy breather

I believe you. I have heard it before. Some louder than others. Sorry Scotty-Can't help you there. I wouldn't think of arguing with someone with inside information.

    Heavy breather

If it's only when she is relaxed, could it be some kind of apnea? When she relaxes something in her airway hangs down and catches the air. This sounds silly, but I wonder if she snores loudly at nap time?

    banamine - why IV only?

OK, we'll use their name for it. Perfomance enhancing drug. It is still illegal. And the book says so. Anything that tests positive gets a dq whether you were aware of the drug being illegal or not. Forget about the "pasture crap" calf- Lets say you and two others are standing top three in the...

    banamine - why IV only?

It's a steroid. I think you will be waiting a long time for Houston to change their mind. What does your exhibitor manual say about banned substances?

    Garden fodder

Hey MPR- My Mom used to throw all kinds of garden stuff into the feedlot. They love it. Steers would line up at the fence when they saw her bringing the stuff. Cows will about fight over sweet corn stalks. Apples, pears and such too. A lot of cattle in citrus country eat oranges and stuff all...

That doesn't sound good. Have you called the vet back since a month ago? Since we can't see him, seems like that would be the best idea.

New member needing help on Salmonella in my herd

First thing is make sure you don't get infected. What does your vet say you can do? I looked this up in my old (outdated) vet manual. According to it,you would not want to keep the cow because she is a carrier. Not sure how you'd handle that. It lists five sources for infection. Recovered cows...
