    new here...please forgive my ignorance...

If it was me, and I had time , land, and money as you seem to have, I would start with one breed, maybe even reg. cattle and build me a herd of good mama cows. I wouldn't worry about this cross or that cross until I needed to make money from them. Maybe not even then. jmo

Angus Heifers, let em have it

There I went and opened my big mouth, when I'm not really qualified. Although I bred reg. holsteins for forty years I'm a greenhorn when it comes to beef. I only know what I have read and heard. What I should have said if they were my heifers I would use Basin Franchise. I hear he is hot right...

You can buy them at our local sale barn at a big discount. People who have a local freezer beef business love them. :)

    Aubrac Bull Sale

Imo the best cattle of the sale were the low percentage Aubrac. Maybe they are just a good cross or the breeders need to sell better purebreds.

    Hereford Udders

I just calved out 3 hereford heifers that I purchased in dam. They have very nice utters, if you can find them! Talk about no milk!

    The Other 50%?

I remember being on a tour of a large feed lot north of Denver several years ago and the one thing that stayed in my mind, was the guide holding a thimble and saying all that wasn't used from a 1400 lb steer would fit in that thimble.

    almost time to buy

I went to the local sale barn weds. I seen good hereford heifers bred 5 months sell for $400.00. By good, I mean they appeared healthy and in good condition and weighed about 1000 lbs. A good young cow bred 2 months brought less than $ 450,00, she weighed 1300 lbs. These cattle were preg checked...

    Things you can't live without....

Besides my family the one thing I wouldn't want to do without is my skid steer. We use it for everything from handling manure and feeding to building fence. We have use it break that stubborn heifer to lead or force that nasty bull on the trailer. We purchased our first one 25 years ago and I...

New Year and the Ag Economy ?

I think predicting the economy is like the weather. A guess. I just dress for bad weather and if it turns out good, I can take some off.

    rare breed and favorite

I'm not condemning anyone and I did investigate. I went to the market and seen good Galloway steers bring less than half of what good Angus steers brought. I'm just saying if you want to try rare breeds you need to have a plan to market them.

    rare breed and favorite

Rare breeds are fine for hobbies. But if you are in it make money you better have a market. I went to the local sale barn a couple weeks ago, good steers 600 lbs Angus $.90 Red Angus $.80 Hereford $.60 Hol. $.50 Galloway $.40 and oddballs lucky to get a bid. Anyone who has Galloway or any other...

    Suprise

When we were in the dairy business it was very important to know as soon as possible if a cow was preg. We did preg checks monthly, a good vet could easly tell at 35 days.
