    Assisted Calves

Canadian Angus has the following to be filled in when registering a calf: U - Unassisted E- Easy Hand-pulled H- Hard, hand or mechanical delivery M- Malpresentation, assisted S - Surgical, Cesarean section birth So, yes, they are definitely asking about easy pulls as well, not just ones done...

    They're all gone

I didn't make it to the sale last week to snoop at prices but just looked them up on the website. Here steers your size went for 140-143 and heifers 134-146. I know who was selling though and there are a lot of replacement heifers sold at that particular sale so that's what drove the upper end...

    Your best beef eating experience?

We eat our own - Red Angus and I am always disappointed when I go out for steak - even more so when I go out for hamburger. Processed at 14 - 24 months (I prefer the 14 months) and aged 21 days. Finished on grass/hay and a small amount of grain. I think it is the best. So yes, I am biased to my...

    Beginner breeds

What do you want to do with them? Eat them, sell the meat, send to market, just look at them? That determines what you should get. Miniature cattle are good if you just want to look at them but you need to look at the market. At an auction the calves won't do that well (at least they wouldn't...

    Pimping your breed

Sometimes but I think you can say good things about the breed you raise and love without stepping on the other breeds to do so. I hope I have not been guilty of breed trashing, yet I also hope that I have told everyone that Red Angus are perfect. ;-)

    Pimping your breed

I expect to see breed pimping, what I hate seeing is breed trashing.

A red White faced PB Char Bull

The cows that were Charolais crosses or Simmental crosses would have male calves that big. We didn't have many of those, better to feed a smaller cow that performs just as well.

A red White faced PB Char Bull

When we were commercial using Charolais bulls 115 lbs was not considered all that big. 140 was big. Even when we had our commercial cows with purebred Red Angus 100+ BW's were standard for us. The cows had no problems calving either.

What do you think. . .? How does. . .??

Doc, I do consider all you mentioned however, I have come on here and asked what people thing of such and such a bull. It is not to base my entire bull semen buying decision on but to get additional information. I have gotten some good information from fellow board members including comments...

    highland cattle

Highlands are pretty much the perfect cow for a hobby. Low maintenance animals. They don't eat much, if you breed to another pure Highland the chance of calving difficulties is slim to none and they are easily trained to respond well to their owner. As far as meat - well it's healthy. I wouldn't...

How to develop a productive herd ?

If the cow is rebreeding as soon as the calf is pulled then I would guess it is not so much the genetics of the cow and her fertility that is the issue. I would think it is either lack of feed or the wrong feed (including mineral). Do you have a good relationship with a good vet? If so talk to...

    advice please

If they can go outside then they are fine. Fence line weaning helps but is not necessary. You have to do what you can on your particular property. Some cows and calves will cause a ruckus no matter what. Hope you are getting more sleep now. :D

    advice please

Agree with you Ryder, wish everyone would put on at least a general location. However, this particular poster has posted pics of his place (no lions or tigers) and has given average temps which I think went from -5 winter to 30 some in summer.

    advice please

Agree with alacowman. You have taken calves that are mooing excessively (thereby doing deeper breathing than normal) and put them in a barn - not good for the lungs. On top of that you have taken them out of the sun which provides a great deal of vitamins. Put them outside, they will be less...
