    How old is her calf?

will she grow out of this

She won't stop--she'll suck on whatever she can when she gets the opportunity. Sorry.

Best tips on bottle feeding calf

As far as I know, convenience for the person doing the feeding. Calf would appreciate three feedings a day, no doubt, maybe not quite a full bottle for the middle feeding, for now.

    Complicated delivery?? Please reply, Thanks!

Sometimes an injection of Banamine works miracles, I'd do 1.5 cc per 100 lbs., no more, in the muscle, I've used it as a last resort a couple of times with lethargic calves, and was amazed, sometimes they are sore and/or inflamed and just feel too bad to function. Sometimes. He'll perk up...

    Banded bull calf issue?

Trim it to an inch long and check for swelling, often the cow licks too much because there is infection. I always trim the cords to an inch (no shorter) at birth to relieve mama of worrying about it and licking unnecessarily--long cords drive them nuts (and do the iodine dip--which doesn't...

First Calf Heifer, not much milk

    Did he take the bottle?

    Problematic Heifer AI

Once was asked if a former show heifer could come stay with my herd to try to get her bred, she had failed to AI, five attempts. Took the bull three cycles to get her bred. She was an over-conditioned nervous wreck when she got here but left a calm, happy bred heifer.

Dang Buzzards killed one of my calves

Since we got some jennies I don't worry about the vultures. We do have to have their hooves trimmed a couple of times a year but other than that they are no trouble, plus they eat a lot of weeds that the cows don't like.

    Solve this one for me....

Also, if she doesn't have enough milk he will move from teat to teat and be obviously frustrated. Sounds like that's not the problem. She doesn't have a tiny udder, does she? Try the Banamine! And check his temp. perhaps. If normal, definitely don't give any antibiotics.

    Solve this one for me....

Give him a shot of Banamine asap. 1.5 cc per 100 lbs. if I remember right, IM. Possibly he's got inflammation enough that he just feels bad. Might not help or might make a world of difference. I gave a shot to one once that just sort of pushed at mom's udder but didn't really latch on and it...

    PREGNANCY STRESS

Yes, do it later and at least give them at least a couple of doses of Banamine for the pain.

What's with all the calving issues this season?

We have plenty of coyotes and they don't bother our cattle at all. Dogs came through once and did, as have the neighbor's dogs til we got donkeys (and the neighbors are gone now and we are stuck with six sweet jennies).............

    stupid hay rings

We have our hay rings custom made--they are a foot taller than a normal hay ring. Always thought it was cruel to make them eat with that cold metal pressing down on their necks. Also prevents them from moving the ring at all, the top rung is too high. I think the cows love them! They are heavy.

1st calf heifer, but mama has no milk

Mama might or might not produce enough for the one bottle in the evening to be sufficient. If baby is hungry in the morning--nursing all the time and moving from teat to teat--and throughout the day, you might have to give a bottle in the AM too. She will keep after mama and not take the bottle...

is this calf able to nurse

Did you get colostrum in him, have you been feeding him....is he still alive? No they can't nurse with the tongue out. Sometimes if you HELP them nurse by holding the tongue in place as he nurses, he will in a few days be able to control the tongue well enough to nurse, but it takes patience...

How early can a 1st time Heifer go into labor?

Did she eat normally when you fed her? Act like she felt okay? I have never had one go off by herself more than a few hours before birth, this doesn't sound normal, esp. if her bag isn't full.

    Calf "hot water bottle"

I'm somewhat new here and everyone may already know about this, but........ large plastic orange juice bottles filled with hot water, placed against a newborn's back and his chest/belly, work really well to help warm him.

    Help please! Weird calf...

This may be totally off, not sure exactly what it looks like, but possibly could be umbilical hernia, try to gently push it up into the body cavity, if it goes in, it might be a hernia (it will come right back out).

    Twins and buzzards....I hate both

Buzzards/vultures roost at night, they can't see to hunt. Turkey vultures won't harm a newborn calf/down cow, etc., the black/Mexican vultures do that. Also, before I got jennies, I had to run off black vultures a couple of times from a cow and newborn calf, I noticed that once you scare them...

    Non fucntioning quarters

Uh, no offense, but looks to me like even if this calf gets all the teats before she gets mastitis, that might not be the case with the next one.
