Herbicide question relative to corn and grain sorghum

My usual grain planting here in Venezuela involves only grain sorghum. This year I'll be planting about 120 acres of grain sorghum but will also plant about 35 acres of white corn. I know very little about corn production. The recommended herbicide products (which are now really hard to find...

    Checking Pastures

Very interesting! Thanks. Here in Venezuela we trust our neighbors. We also build very good fences and round up and count our cattle every night. :lol2:

    Checking Pastures

A question OT from a guy who knows nothing about ranching in Montana. I assume the cattle in that first photograph are yours. Is it custom out in big sky country to check on one's cattle only every 45 days or so?

    Hand planting coastal or russell

I planted my first bermuda in 2008. We planted by hand and it was slow and costly from a manpower standpoint thought the final results were good. It took us a few days to plant about 20 acres. Here's a shot of that process. The following year I came across a used "broadcasting machine" and...

How to determine the acreage of a field

Inyati13's posts in this thread make me think of this Bob Seger song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mRFWQoXq4c Of course, Fire Down Below might be a better match. :D

    Putting up hay and concrete

I'm going to store a couple of thousand small squares of bermuda this year here at the house for later sale (Jan-Feb timeframe). My sheds now have concrete floors. While totally cured, something about putting bales directly in contact with the concrete is unappealing. I'm using pallets...

    Fertilizing question

Woke up to a slow, steady drizzle this morning. I'm a happy man. :D

    Fertilizing question

Late yesterday afternoon we got a good shower on my grain sorghum (it's about 15 days since sprouting) so I decided to fertilize this morning. My soils are basically a sandy loam and the terrain is fairly hilly. I broadcast both urea and 10-20-20. Of course I was hoping for another shower...

Question re urea versus fertilizer on grain sorghum

That reminds me, he commented that the soils in my area are usually high in potassium. Another question JS. When I planted grain sorghum a few years ago, I actually got two crops out of it. I'm planting later this year, but with enough rainfall should get some decent second growth, if not a...

Question re urea versus fertilizer on grain sorghum

From what I've read on the internet, grain sorghum responds well to nitorgen applications. I've planted about 50 acres, the seedlings are now about 12 days old, and with the next rain intend to broadcast about 125 lbs per acre of urea. During a phone conversation the other night with a friend...

Someone locally recommended PROWL herbicide on grain sorghum

Thanks for that info Jed. I broadcast to plant grain sorghum and then cover lightly with a plow. Apparently PROWL is used extensively here while seeding corn. Based on the information provided here, I'll just stick with applications of Potreron if a broadleaf problem pops up.

Someone locally recommended PROWL herbicide on grain sorghum

Since posting this thread I've done some reading on the product and it does sound like it might be a bit more complicated, and therefore somewhat risky for me to use. I need to really keep things simple here.....here being Venezuela. I've planted a lot of grain sorghum in the past and have...

Is the lumber wolmanized? That's supposed to be an environmentally-friendly method of treating lumber.

    A question about grain sorghum

Now that would certainly put a kink in my plans, wouldn't it. :) I don't know JS but will try to find out.

    A question about grain sorghum

After a two month wait I was finally able to secure 15 sacks of grain sorghum for planting. This should be enough to seed 15 hectares or about 37 acres. Our "winter", or rainy season is well underway and I'll get this stuff in the ground as quickly as possible. With a bit of luck, I should be...

Herbicide question - Bentazon + MCPA

Found this via google. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MCPA MCPA is used as an herbicide, generally as its salt or esterified forms. Used thus, it controls broadleaf weeds, including thistle and dock, in cereal crops and pasture. It is selective for plants with broad leaves, and this includes...

Herbicide question - Bentazon + MCPA

What the heck is it? Sold here under the name of Basagran MS60. Told it was for broadleaf but I really need some more details on the stuff. I can look it up in Spanish, but frankly, my eyes will probably bleed trying to read it. :D Anyone?

    Questions about baling grain sorghum

Jed, I'm assuming that's worked well for you if you've already done a few thousand bales. I really like the idea for two reasons....first, I'd not have to put one of my mowers that I use on bermuda to use, and secondly, I'd think cutting with a bush hog would be pretty fast. Last year was my...
