Thanks dun. After reading that, looks like his goose is cooked! He must have listened to someone behind the counter and not read the label.

    Bailed Hay ?

I have customers who want light bales; complain if if they weigh more than 30 lbs. Others want as much hay as I can stuff into a bale. Using a bale thrower I don't like to mess with the length of the bales, so those 30 lb. bales can be pretty spongy. Also how consistant the size of the windrows...

    Low Forage Supplies

I never had any luck telling my cows thats all you need today.

    Hay vs. Silage

Mnmt, can you get by feeding corn silage as the sole source of forage? Won't the cows get too fat?

    Chopping Corn

I prefer piling or stacking to bagging simply because of cost. The last I made a bag of corn silage it cost me $1,000 for the use bagger and the bag. That was for 125 ton bag. That was several years ago and I don't believe it has gotten any cheaper. I would not try to pile 250 ton of silage by...

    Custom baling square bales

I charge $1.75 per bale [45 to 50 lb bale]. That is for mowing, teding, raking , and baling. We use a bale thrower on the baler to load the wagons. We pull the wagons to their barn they unload. I just did some 2nd cutting for myself and it was a little light. I think I would have lost money at...

    Rented hay land.

Steve is right. You need to show a little back bone. If you don't say anything this time don't expect to be treated different the next time.

    hay question

That was not coastal, it was a mix of alfalfa, timothy, and reed canary. They try to keep the % of alfalfa very low. He showed me a sample, it was mostly grass. Good stuff though. At $12.00 a bale it better be gold. I don't think CB would grow in Canada.

    hay question

When I was at the Farm Show in Syracuse, talked to grass seed salesman from Canada, and he said he was getting $12.00 a bale for small squares delivered to Florida. I think I would want a horse pretty bad to pay that!

    Listen............Can you hear it?

The only thing green around here is me. I'm so jealous. I'm looking out my window at a 15 foot pile of snow. We have so much snow here, it won't melt before July. We have only had 2 days in the past 30 that the temp. has reached 32. My daughter living in Houston calls every day to rub it in...

    Rake Question

You can put more hay in a crooked windrow than a streight one. That my excuse.

Where is the best cattle producing land in America?

Good post. But I doubt if you get a definitive answer. You might find a state like SD where you know that you can't graze more than 8 months, but because of land cost and taxes may give you the most bang for the buck.

    Dry Hay to Baleage Conversion

Of course it depends on the %moisture but I always figured 3 pounds of silage = one pound of hay. But if it is good 50% balage I would figure 2 to 1.

Poly wire for temp. electric fence

I have never had much luck with poly wire especially when I use it where there old fence or a wooded area. I was always told not to strech too tight I find it wrapped on old wire or brush. Sometimes just broken. I have a friend who has 100 angus cows and backgrounds all his calves for a year...

Poly wire for temp. electric fence

The wind is a big problem, also deer catch their antlers in it and tear it out. Waste of time and money.
