Seeking advice on bermuda vs bahia in a new pasture.

Your ground seems about the same as mine. Bahia will do fine with little care. Sometimes you should just take what the good lord gives ya. With the added expenses and risk of drought I've never had the stomach to sprigg bermuda in my dirt with no way to irrigate. I guess its something you'll...

    Hay cost in Alabama

Jo, I'm right here in west central GA. about 20 miles from Ala. I have noticed for years the hay seems to bring more over there.I usally pay 35 a 4x5 roll around here in Ga. And they seem to get 55 to 65 over there. All I could ever figure is they have more horse folks driving the price up.I wont...

    Bahia sprouts

Yeah Jogeephus but it aint in style.Poor mans coastal.Nobody likes what the poor man has.I dont give a damn what it is as long as the cows eat it.Mine will pick bahia over just about anything else I have.

    Bahia sprouts

Also bahia establishes pretty slow so be patient. The hotter the better.Mine is just now starting to grow good now that we've hit the mid 80's. It prolly wont be to it's full potential for a year or 2.I like to plant millet as a nurse crop the first year.I followed Jogeephus advice on that and it...

    A dumb question

Thanks for all the good advice. It is a great deal. The hunter did have more money than sense and he ruined some great coastal pastures to boot to plant"food plots".He was also the lady's son in law and there is a big "D" involved.Thats why its a legal deal.I'll try not to get shot.

    A dumb question

Thanks Ya'll.Keep them coming if you have suugestions. My man Joggephus should have some reigonal advice for me.He has planted everything that will grow ,I think.Although it seems my only option is gonna be turn em out on it and see what happens. If the grass dont come back after its gone ,I'll...

    A dumb question

Nah.Not much wheat grown here for harvest. Are you saying it will not be suitable for forage by then.I would get someone to cut it for hay but I cant touch it until June 1st due to legal issues(long story).I think it would be past the stage you cut wheat for hay by then.Am I gonna have basically...

    Coastal Bermuda Hay

No the grass should be fine.If he had some malnurished he shoulda seen that coming.I dont think not fertilizing the coastal and the dead cows are related.Should check the protein in the hay though and supplement if needed.

    A dumb question

I feel like this is a dumb question I should know the answer to but I dont.Ok,here's the deal. There is a lady down the road w/ 100 acre pasture she said I could use for free just to keep it down.1/2 is decent fescue and coastal.Thats fine. The other half was panted in wheat I presume in the fall...

    Tifton 9 establishment

Can you irrigate it.I personally couldnt stomach the risk as dry as it's been the last few years.I can get regular P-Cola Bahia for $75 for 50#.Either way ,just be patient .Bahia dosent establish real fast. But once it does put some N to it and look out.I usally just lightly disc,broadcast,drag...

    Planned Crabgrass Forage

I think I might try it on a small plot .I guess 10 acres since the seeding rate is 5# an acre.I,ve got a spot in mind with a little bahia and regular crabgrass and lots of bare spots.I've got a few more ?'s if you dont mind.1-What seeding rate did you use?2-Did you use a drill or broadcast and...

    Planned Crabgrass Forage

I've wanted to try Red River bad but the price scared the heck out of me.Been way too dry the past few summers for me to stomach the risk. Also I was worried how good it would reseed on it's own since it's an annual.Convince me and I might take the gamble this year as wet as it's been so far.If...

Slinging Ryegrass and Crimson Seed Today!

I did the same last week and got 2.5 inches of rain the next day.Man that Crimson is kicking a$$ already.I wish I had planted more of it rather than the ryegrass but it was my first time mixing in the clover and I wasnt sure how it would do in my soil.I was a little leery with the price of the...

    New Bahia Pasture

Yeah that was me .I dont think it hurt it one bit.Heck the bahia is out growing the millet in most spots for some reson.Might be because of the ph being a little low.I'm open to suggestions on the clover but what kind and how will it do in soil with about 5.5-6.0 ph.I'm not gonna spend the...
