    How are cuts made?

Officials put cuts on a class in a judging contest as a way to score the participants placings in the contest. 4/1 was a harder decision than 1/3, therefore the cut was less. The placing of 1/3 should have been more obvious, and therefore the higher cut. With the bottom pair you would only take...

Simmi Bull to breed show calves.

Here's a fourth recommendation for Simme Valley Macho As U! I have only had two calves but they were both really nice, I'm planning on keeping this years calf as a herd bull. I just posted pictures of him on the breeds board. However, I also really like SS Goldmine. My current herd bull is out...

    Update on my heifer

I like your heifer A LOT! I have always liked her from the pictures on here and was really impressed when I saw her in person at Hernando. (Thats me showing the Charolais in the picture you posted)

let me know what you think of this heifer

Hernando pays pretty well. Payout is a percentage of entries and there was only two commercial bulls in the show last year so thats why the payout for Reserve Commercial Bull was so low. Heifers and showmanship paid good. The judge that was supposed to judge Sumter did not show up. Therefore...

    Maines/Club Calves

I have been told by a few people that Maines usually don't milk very well. I was wondering if that's true for the most part. I am looking at two heifers out of Who Made Who that are bred to Ali. They are really nice, I was just wondering how Who cows usually do as momma cows. I will probably be...

    County Fair

Just got done at the county fair, loaded my steer up last night. He was a purebred Black Angus that I raised myself, I was the only exhibitor who bred and exihibited their own steer, he is a calf out of one of my old show cows. He was the only purebred steer in the barn. He weighed in at...

    Pics of my steer

He looks a whole lot different now and really has grown, he weighs about 1075 and is eating 32lbs of feed a day. I am trying to upload some pictures of him into photobucket to post but its not working to well, dial-up internet sucks!

    Donkey

I was also wondering if it worked. I have a jack but have been afraid to use him on the calves. He seems to rule the roost with the cows and doesn't let anything new come into the pasture, but I didn't know if a calf would hurt him. He is a mini donkey, not a standard. Should he be able to...

    Show Heifer

I am looking at a 3/4 Maine 1/4 Limi show heifer. She has been weaned and on feed for 60 days, but she is only 6 months old. I always leave my calves on their mommas until 6 months, I was wondering what the drawbacks are for a calf being weaned at 4 months or if there is any.

    Which to choose......

You have it right. The fair holds back 4 of the calves that were not drawn and they will keep them for the next two weeks. Within that time period if something happens to the steer or the kid feels it is unbreakable they can sell it and then buy one of the four steers the fair kept.

    Which to choose......

This is for everyone who is showing a steer at the state fair. 4-H and FFA.

    Which to choose......

They try to make it so that it is fair, in the end there is no auction and every one gets market price for their steer. The way you make money is by earning points. The number of points you earn depends on how much you do. You get points for attending seminars, showmanship, record books, record...

    Which to choose......

Our steer weigh in is September 9th. I can only take one. The Limo cross is larger framed but also has alot more muscle. I am getting ready to head out, I get my steer for the state fair this morning. It's a little scary, they draw to see who gets what pick and there is 75 kids. I dont know if...

    Which to choose......

I have a purebred Angus steer that I have been planning on showing in a Market Steer show. He will be around 13 months at fair. He is out of one of my old show cows and I have been working with him for a while, and he is already cut. Then the guy down the road has a 1/2 Angus 1/2 Limo bull calf...

The sad thing is I have never watched one of their shows. I dont see them alot, but I always see their sister. She lives right behind us, my stepmom grew up with them. They raise Charolais.

Yep, that will be gone by the time fair roles around. Our fair adopted a new rule, that calves have to be clipped to less than 1/4 inch. No hair to hide faults that the calves might have. That rule has been in effect for about three years now at our fair.
