    Poly Bale Feeder

    What if a bale gets dropped on them from a loader? I feed with a bale bed or loader over the top of my feeders. I'm not talking about dropping from a great distance but sometimes I can't get backed all the way to the feeder so I set it on top of the feeder and it rolls inside.

    Planting a winter crop

    Stocker steve got me thinking on the grazing corn post. I have 4 acres that I winter cows on and calve them out before taking to grass. I have been planting corn/soybean rotation every year and run hot wire to let them clean up stalks. The field is getting compacted pretty good and the corn...

    Chopping corn

    I've seen where guys line up hay bales on the sides and for a wall in the back to help keep it all together. You can spread rock salt on top to help it crust too. Probably 2-300 lbs for a pile that size Bigfoot.

    Seeding down $2.50/bu corn fields?

    I thought our government did away with the CRP program, but maybe that's a state by state thing. The only thing they pay on now is buffer strips around creeks or wetlands and I think it pays well. I think it will take 2 years of $2 corn for people to seed down pastures again but the feedlots...

    What kind of netwrap are you using?

    I've been using Pritchett net wrap on my Jd 535 for the past 4-5 years because it's cheaper and it's heavier than the ambraco that Jd sells. They come in different colors so you can "color code" your hay from year to year so you can tell how old it is. They also make a cover edge wrap too. Might...

    How do you test your hay to know its ready to bale?

    Are you crimping your grass hay or laying it flat with a disk mower or sickle mower? I've been laying it flat and letting it lay for a day then rake/bale on 3rd day. I've often thought it was dry on 2nd day but I never baled it that quick for fear of bales getting hot. 2 years ago in the...

    Hay Season 2014

    We just had a hard frost 2 nights in a row, so that will definetly hurt everyone's hay around here. At least what hay ground that hasn't been torn up, and farmed. More grass is being killed every year here. My brome/fescue is about ankle high and getting heads on it. Luckily I had plenty of...

    What signs do you look for before you put cows out on pastur

    A lot will depend on the grass that's in there and how hard it was grazed the year before. I like to graze fescue early. I also found another pasture but they mowed it for hay, and there's a lot of grass around the trees and brush to feed them for a while. I turned em on it this week. I normally...

    How we've handled the droughts

    I grind corn and pellets, mix in a little mineral for a ration to feed my cows every once in a while. I blend creep feed in summer months for calves. Mine does NOT grind hay very well, I've tried it several times and it plugs up behind the blower. They make a high powered magnet for those to...

    How we've handled the droughts

    I've got that same feed grinder ( hammer mill), it's a bear cat brand. Mine has the swing auger to bring grain up into the mill, but they look the same. Those are good machines. I've never been around a tub grinder, do they grind a bale very fast? It's good to hear that you kept everything thru...

    Hay Unrolling?

    I would just unroll one bale in the morning, maybe 1/2 a bale that night and see how they do. I figure 25lbs per/hd/day. Depends on bale size too. I bought one of those last year, this year I bought a krogman bed, they work great for unrolling straw, corn stalks, hay or carrying deer to the shed!

    Burnt hay

    I've seen this before in hay, even if it didnt get rained on it can be baled wet and cause this. The hay I saw was good till the very center of the bale and that was hard, burnt, and smelled awe full. If you bought this hay I would definetly show the seller and try to trade for better stuff. I...

    $ Raising Replacement Heifers

    I guess what I meant was that if everybodies heifers went to feedlot/slaughter, does it make since now? I didn't mean that EVERYBODY should keep their heifers. Sorry for the confusion

    $ Raising Replacement Heifers

    If nobody ever kept any replacement heifers, then where in the world would everybody get their cows? Some people think they can buy better heifers than they raise, and sell their own to market. I bet whoever buys their heifers is turning a bull in with them 6-8 months later selling these as...

    Will this work???

    Pine trees are a soft wood, oak and hickory are hardwood trees.

    High Efficiency Hay Feeder

    The hay wagons I've seen seem to hold a lot of hay in the floor and don't shed water at all, ruining the hay on the floor. Perfect place for bacteria/rust. I'd rather use multiple rings than a trailer with a floor.

    What to Seed With Fescue

    Ditto what dun said, when the fescue dies down, the clover will start coming on strong. I have a hayfield that always comes back strong with clover after its been mowed. I mow the clover and square bale it for show steers

    leasing hay ground prices?

    Ask him what he wants to rent the hay ground, try and Jew him down some, if he don't like your offer then give him what he wants if its not totally outrageous. Hay ground is extremely rare around here and pasture is even harder to find. At least if you lock it in you have your foot in the door...

    corn stalk for feed

    I got by last winter on corn stalk bales but just barely. They will eat them about twice as fast as hay bales since the nutrients are so low but it'll buy you some time and definetly stretches your hay supply. I fed ground corn daily anyways so I did not supplement with any tubs. My cows came...

    Doing sudan hay (pictures)

    How long does it take to dry down when cut with your disk mower? I always heard its better to crimp Sudan since its real watery. I've never planted any, how many lbs/acre and how much fert does it need? Just wondering
