    Sad lookin pasture

We started feeding hay last week to keep condition on our bred cows. We have not had any significant rain in over 4 weeks and everything is brown and dry!

    Thorn bushes/trees

Check w/your local extension office. I know there is a class in Kaufman county coming up in August. Cost is $25.00. Watch a video for 4 hours and then take the test. You will know when you leave if you passed or not. They will give you a packet and you send $60 to the state for your...

    CRP grazing/haying apparently on hold

I agree they enrolled their acreage and should stick it out. BUT, if they do graze or hay those acres, they should forfeit any payments and not be allowed to double dip.

    Long Day at the vet

Sounds like that would have been a bargain at twice the price! Hope he continues to heal. Good luck.

Please analyze my Seasonal Ranching Plan

They are right about the market being lower in the fall. Could you consider buying 10 calves and putting them on the stockpiled 30 acres, selling them in the spring when prices are starting to go up?

    Need advice on cattle panels

try www.craigslist.com They have a farm & garden section you can search for what you are looking for or even post what you are wanting to buy. We have done both with good results. Sometimes people have things they are not using and don't think about posting for sale until they read your ad...

Compact pickups (Ranger, S10, Dakota, Tacoma)

We have a '96 Ranger with over 240,000 miles on it. All three kids learned to drive a stick in it and I have learned only recently so did all their friends. It is a miracle the transmission has lasted this long. I finally replaced the clutch last year but that was no big deal. We have done...

    Question...

We have the same thing here. I have a couple of calves that I can touch all over their head and face, but one little heifer calf does not like me to touch the top of her head. You can either keep touching her, hoping she will get used to it or do as Knersie suggested and stop touching her there.

    bull calf with horns

He may be polled but have scurs, that will not develop into full blown horns. Take him to the vet and they can nip off for about $6-8.00. The hair will grow over the area and you will not be able to tell.

    Hormone Imbalance?

We have that option at our sale barn Mscamp and that is exactly what we planned on doing (designating for slaughter). I feel vidicated by your and Dun's remarks. Thank you!

    Birth Weight Question

Thanks guys, I was beginning to worry that our calves were too light. They are all healthy and grow like bad weeds! We made the mistake with our first round of calves in 2006 of over feeding the momma cows, not realizing the strain delivering such a large calf can be. Thank goodness we did...

    Birth Weight Question

Thanks for the quick response, Dun. We just had the smallest calf ever born yesterday. I bet she doesn't weigh 60 lbs and 20 of that is in her long legs! All our calves are smaller but they do grow fast. The largest calf we have had born was in the 80lb range.

    Birth Weight Question

Is there such a thing as too small a calf? What would be an ideal weight?

    Hormone Imbalance?

Although not specifically stated, we did not plan on dumping this cow on some poor unsuspecting soul at the sale barn. I would appreciate a little faith people. We are trying to build up our reputation and that is not the way to do it.

    Hormone Imbalance?

Thanks, Randi. She is definitely gone. I want to wait til she calves because I can get more for a pair than a heavy bred cow. I know this might sound selfish, but she is registered and I might not be able to replace her unless I wait. I don't get near her because I know I cannot move quick...

    Hormone Imbalance?

Do cows get crazier when they are pregnant or about to deliver? We have a retired couple that live behind our property (the ones we bought the 7 acres from) that like to walk down their long driveway in the evenings for exercise. We saw them and stopped to chat. There are two very pregnant...

Been making Biodiesel for 3 weeks now.

In Texas, the first 400 gallons per personal use are tax free, after that you are expected to pay the gas tax.

Been making Biodiesel for 3 weeks now.

I am interested in knowing where you got your kit? Is it cone shaped or flat? I am to the point of making a test batch and get up and running from there. What are you doing with the left over glycerine? Are you having a hard time find a source for the oil?
