    Cow/Bull interaction

The bull was put with the cows April 13. So, today is his 62nd day with them. I plan to leave him in until June 28 (that's 76 days). This past calving season, all calves were born within 60 days. And that's what I like to see. I haven't seen him acting interested in any of the cows in quite a...

    Tire problem

Walked by my tractor this afternoon and found this. I assume air has gotten between the plys, somehow. Any of you had this happen? Is it repairable? It is a front tire and I do use my loader quite a bit. Drill a hole to let the air escape and then put a tube in it? Run it like it is? Or just...

    What would you do?

In October I overseeded about 5 acres of summer grass pasture with Durana clover. I left the cows on it for a few days to tromp it in and crop the summer grass down (mostly bahia along with Quick-N-Big crabgrass). The cows haven't been on it since then. The clover is coming on pretty good now...

    What I see today

Marshall ryegrass (sown October 13) is up enough to give the cows some limited grazing time on it. They're getting 1 hour/day on 2-acre parcels, then it's back to the hay. There is some Wrens Abruzzi Rye on the edges. This is a one of my hay fields. Moved the cows over here October 30 to graze...

    Suggestions for fencing HUA

I've qualified for some NRCS EQUIP help. As part of that, a well has been drilled and I'm getting ready to start laying pipe to the locations for 3 watering facilities. I'm going to use 4-ball freezeless MiraFount waterers. Each of these watering facilities is required to have a Heavy Use Area...

    Good sign or bad sign?

Got my 2nd hay cutting on this field May 7. It was predominantly ryegrass that had been drilled into what is mostly bahia summer grazing. On May 12 I drilled Tifleaf 3 Pearl Millet into that stuble. The millet and bahia have been growing together since then. I turned the cows onto it for the...

    solar well pump

I've qualified for some cost-sharing through NRCS here in GA. This will include a well that I really want/need in order to get my cows out of their current water source (a small pond down in the woods) and will allow me to better manage my grazing. Rather than getting EMC to run a powerline for...

    Waiting on me

They were a little impatient with me today and were ready for their daily allotment. But, when I finally got the fence moved, I think they were enjoying it.

    Today's effort

Put 24 acres on the ground today. About 15 acres of ryegrass, clover, vetch, and some lespedeza. And about 9 acres of ryegrass, oats, and rye. Hope the weather forecast holds true.

    Grazing/Nutrition question

When I started to let the cows limit graze (2-3 hours/day) the winter grazing (mostly annual ryegrass) around the first of the year I also had hay for them to eat because they really didn't have anything else to eat. They've been on free choice high mag minerals since the end of November or so...

    Current grazing situation

Shown below is my current grazing situation. Drilled rye, oats, and ryegrass at the end of October. The cows are on their 3rd rotation through it now. I'm limit grazing paddocks that are about 2 acres in size with 24 momma cows, 4 heifers and 19 calves (as of right now). This time through...

    question

Had a cow to calf yesterday morning with no problems. When I got there the calf was just born, cleaned off, and Mom was encouraging him(big bull calf) to nurse. Placenta material hanging from cow's vulva appeared normal. I went back about 5 hours later to check on them again. The cow now had a...

    Grass on new land

I'm located in East Central Georgia, north of I-20 (yep it's really dry here right now). I'm in the process of converting timber land into pasture. Loggers just moved out last week and land clearing crew moving in by the end of this week. This will be about 25 acres. I'm asking for suggestions...

    Virginia grass

My wife and I just got home from a 6-day bicycle ride/tour in the Woodstock, VA to Harrisonburg, VA area (Shenandoah, Rockingham, and Augusta counties). Man, are you guys in that area growing some grass right now! I had read here on CT not long ago the concern some of you had about not getting a...

    Pasture help/advice

This is gonna be a little long. I'm located in East Central Georgia between Athens and Augusta. I've been trying to get my pastures "right", or better than they used to be before I took over control from my Dad just a couple of years ago. He didn't really do anything to them except a little...
