5 yrs for burning 139 acres of BLM

I haven't followed the federal land/grazing issues as closely as some have but there seem to be some basic princibles that apply anywhere in the country. When you lease land to farm you don't have as much control. I see farmers locally who get extremely upset when a landowner wants to change or...

    Just want to break even

What you have to remember is that the land value is part of your profit. If you can come anywhere close to breaking even and end up with 300 acres free and clear thats a pretty good amount of money. Best of luck and I think you can do it if you are careful.

    First Time Weaning

After 2-3 days it will get a lot better every day. I dont trust calves for a week though. Even after they stop making a lot of noise they are still on edge and will be taking advantage of any chance of excape.

Is now a good time to sell calves ?

I've been thnking the same, at least the high until the grass turns green. I have some 5 and 6 weight calves that need to go or I'm going to run short on hay.

Is now a good time to sell calves ?

I've got a question I've been thinking a lot about. Prices seem to be going up a bit lately. I've also talked to a lot of people who did what I did and held calves that they normally would have shipped this fall. Everyone I talk to is thinking of selling fairly soon to cash in on the price rise...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

Thanks Dave. I also have been buying thin cows, I don't think I've had a cow yet that didn't gain weight and raise a decent calf.

Is now a good time to buy calves?

Thank you for the advice. I have had a hard time finding large farms to rent. All of my cows are on pastures less than 100 acres including some woods on every place. Some of the places are only a few miles apart so its not a big deal to check cows. The two problems I've had is feeding hay in the...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

You are correct. I've expermented with it a bit, so far I've made money every year. I'm having a hard time finding large farms to rent while smaller fields seem more available. This method allows me to have cattle spread around here and there. I don't need a bull and really don't have to do much...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

I'm just saying thats what I've been experimenting with because it was brought up. There are a number of other reasons it seems to be working for me at the moment. As far as calves if I had my finances in order I would probably buy some calves now as well. One thing I have noticed locally is...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

Well first let me say my advice is worth about as much as used hay, if you get my drift. What I've been experimenting with is buying old cows bred 6-9 months. Calve them out, keep them 6-8 months, sell the calves, sell the cows as open butcher cows, repeat. So far I've been about able to double...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

SJB is so right, this is an opportunity. Unfortunately I have all my extra cash tied up in buying my wifes home place. Maybe I can remodel quickly, sell my current place and still have time to buy in? Doubt it

    Explain the difference

Cattle are graded on 3 frame sizes ( L, M and S) and 3 muscle thickness(1,2 and 3). When I was running stockers I wanted #2 calves because I could buy more frame and less fat and then they would gain very well on good grass and grain.

Most bull sales I've been to sell the highest preforming bull of the test first and then down the list to the lowest preforming one last.
