    Cattle Prices Going Forward

We need the cheap, lean Argentine beef to mix with the extra fat we produce to make hamburger.

    CAB is a Trademark Brand

They get a few dollars for every carcass certified CAB.

    CAB is a Trademark Brand

AAA owns CAB. All the revenue from CAB goes to AAA. They report it as income. It's really simple.

    CAB is a Trademark Brand

CAB is one of the main sources of revenue for the AAA. It may have been started to sell bulls, but now it's a huge revenue stream.

    Black Hereford

Very, Very few holsteins can meet the ribeye, carcass weight, and muscling requirements of CAB.

    Black Hereford

The other CAB requirements would keep out "old black cows". You should read them.

    Question on calf quality...

Several years later, some of those mommas would have been culled. The gene pool of the older cows "should" be better genetics.

Parents driving their kids to school

You are wrong about your life expectancy statement. Life expectancies have decreased several times in the last 50 years. Most recently in 1993 (besides 2016). They have all been just a small blip that changed for the better right away.

Parents driving their kids to school

I didn't read all the replies, by more parents work outside the home/farm than in the past. It may be a lot more convenient for many of those parents to drop their kids off on the way to work than to wait for the bus.

    Jersey bull on first timers

We've done it here. After the first few hit the ground, we quit checking on them. Zero calving problems. These were jersey bulls on Angus and Hereford heifers. The calves weren't bad at all. A feeder said he could consistently get 60% choice from angus/jersey calves, and they can qualify...

W/O COOL - Carcass Quality Means Nothing

100 miles doesn't sound too bad to me. My wife has to travel almost 100 to the nearest Wal-mart. I have to travel 20 miles to buy gasoline. I have 2 usda custom processors within 60 miles.

W/O COOL - Carcass Quality Means Nothing

By far the largest branded beef program. One BILLION pounds of beef sold per year. It is a pretty big deal.

W/O COOL - Carcass Quality Means Nothing

There is nothing illegal about labeling meat "product of the USA". It is just against our trade deals to make it mandatory. Any packer can do it at any time. If there was a demand for it by the consumer, it would be happening. If you think it would be a big seller, you do it. Let capitalism...

    Black Herefords Question

I think black herefords have to be at least 7/8 hereford - so not much heterosis there. The idea was to get a homozygous black hereford cross to mate with other breeds and get black calves. This was done to compete with angus. To get a 7/8 hereford that was homozygous black, they had to...

    Calving

"Many of you say you have XXX years experience, but do you really? Maybe it was the same year repeated XXX times. Be honest, except for trying a different bull of a new fly spray or some such thing, was this year much different than last year or the year before that?" This question/statement...

    Calving

The cow needs the best feed when she is nursing a calf - not before. The calves SHOULD be standing in good grass while they nurse. As for your last sentence - it shows lack of experience and lack of exposure to diverse operations.

Calculating Cost in Heifers and Bulls

You don't have to pay taxes on the calf, but neither can you depreciate out the calf on your taxes like you can with a purchased heifer.
