    911 bloated cow!

THANK YOU for your reply! I got some veg. oil down her, walked her for about 40mins, rubbed her sides and then tied her so she was facing uphill. I just finished milking her and she is back to normal size! Luckily I didn't have to puncture her! Thanks again!

    Passing afterbirth question

Thank you everyone for your input! This morning it had been almost 48hrs since she had calved and she still hadn't passed the afterbirth, it was covered with flies and really starting to smell so I decided to remove it. Everything went fine and there was no bleeding. She is eating and drinking...

    Passing afterbirth question

Thank you for your reply. As of now all of the milk she is giving is going to her calf. As she picks up production and the colostrum ends then I will milk her for my use (cheese making, etc.). Sorry for not being more clear. Tobey

    Nutrition for milking Dexter

My Dexter freshened yesterday morning and she will be my first milker and I want to make sure she is getting the right kind of nutrition. I was looking online and saw that you have to be careful not to give Dexter's to much protein so I was wondering if there are any diary Dexter owners out...

    Passing afterbirth question

My Dexter calved 13hrs ago and still has the placenta and other afterbirth "hanging". Shouldn't she have passed it by now? When do I need to start worrying here? She had the calf on her until this morning and she will be milked again this evening. Thanks! Tobey

Feeding schedule for day old calf

My Dexter calved a bull yesterday morning and this morning I pulled the calf away. I was going to wait for a little while but I was afraid his mother was going to hurt him as she kept hitting him with her horns which would sent him flying. I have gotten all of my Dexter's as adults and so don't...

    earth quake in Haiti

A terrible thing indeed, they never recovered from the last tidal wave. The local Church had mission groups over there, they say it is a nightmare. Just a heads up, don't donate using your Visa card (as they are advertising you can do) as they take a 3% cut. Getting rich off of donations, some...

    Raw Milk ?

Forgot to add, I do not think that the government has any business in this area. If people know the potential risk it is their right to make the decision. Last year the feds busted a local Amish family for selling raw milk, I see their point though. I mean just look at it from the feds point of...

    Raw Milk ?

Kansas does allow sells of raw milk with these restrictions: • It must be sold on the farm where the milk is produced • It must be to the final customer; • It can be advertised on the farm only; • The advertisement must state the milk is raw, unpasteurized, and ungraded. We sell raw goats...

whaddaya do with a bunch of peach seeds?

Plant them. Most likely they will not bare fruit but will put on flowers which will draw in bees which are good for your garden. The more bees you can draw in the better. You never know though, my neighbor has a lovely peach tree that gives off about two bushels a year and it was grown out of...
