    Sold out

Well for the last couple years I have been screwing around with some cows and finally last week it came to an end. The property next to us came up for sale and the only way I could swing the deal was to sell it all. Now all I have is a head chute,corral,1tractor, and a big empty pasture. Two...

Interesting cow stories, I'd like to hear them

Was at the local auction one day and a nice little black hiefer bottle calf came in the ring. I was in no intention of buying anything, but she went so cheap I couldnt resist. After purchasing the $50 girl I backed my pickup to the alley way and promptly picked her up and put her in the bed, no...

    Best Bull names you've heard....

we have had "red light special", "overturn zeus", and the newest little hereford bull on the place is "spanky". My 4 year old son named him. Best one was a buddy of mine had a one BITE him when he went to band it. We ended up buying him and named him "chomps" in honor of my buddies little mishap.

    Month you start feeding hay

Thanks for the insight in different areas. I calve early fall so the cows still have some good green grass for a month or two before they get brought up to barn paddock. It seems even when the grass is green but short the cows start bawling like they know it is time for the hay feeders to get...

    Month you start feeding hay

Simple question: Where you live and when do you have to put out your first bale of hay? We are in central Indiana and almost every year like clockwork I have to start feeding hay the week before thanksgiving and stop feeding last week of March/first week of April.

Late-winter sorghum and other ranch scenes

Always interesting to see how it is done elsewhere. I love the pics. Had a friend take a trip down to Brazil this summer for a crop tour. Hopefully I get pulled to go next year. Would love the chance to see the country first hand.

    Favorite Beef Cuts

I could live off strip steaks. Also very addicted to brisket when smoked and seasoned right.

    Loading Cattle

Worst "incident" I ever had was loading a hereford steer that had VERY long horns. I loaded him with swing gate open and he walked right in. When I got to the butcher I didn't even think about having to unload him through the slide gate. His damn horns were to wide and I could not get him to...

    screwed by the butcher

Thanks guys, in all it seems there is something fishy with this guy. He is new in the area and just started beef this year. It seems that some people got too much back and some not enough. Maybe just a mix up in the back of who got what percentage. I have never looked at the hoof weight compared...

    screwed by the butcher

The customer bought the whole steer(925lbs). He only got 270 lbs of meat back from the WHOLE steer. The others that were havled got more back from a half a side of beef than the guy that bought a whole side of beef.

    screwed by the butcher

Took some freezer beefs in a couple weeks ago for some people and got a call this morning. The one in question was bought by a single person and cut typical, nothing fancy. The steer weighed 925 when I took him in. The people only got back 270 lbs. of meat. The other steers I took in weighed...

What do you do with your cattle?

I use mine as a reason to drink beer. I would just look like a drunk sitting in a barn drinking beer, but with cattle around I am "working".
