All my kin-folks came from Tennessee after the war and settled in Central Texas. Wonder what this Country would be like if we had won, sure would be different. I guess that is the reason I have had a hard time coping with authority all my life too much of the South in me.

Had experience with same type of cattle guard 40 years ago, on a ranch I worked on. The cattle would walk across it, tried painting every other pipe yellow and black per Boss, cattle still walked across, it's just too shallow with the slant to scare them.

The first thing would be to wein or to sell the 400 lb calves. At this time of year and your pasture conditions all they are donig is pulling your cows down. You need to have them in good shape to go into winter. To do that they need their protein and roughage requirements.

Mesquite tree makes a real good shade for the cows, and they eat the beans that it produces, also you can grind up the beans and make a masa out of it to make a flat bread similar to a tortia. Also the cows and horses eat the mesquite bean and it passes through them and little mesquites come up...

I have Alicia and I have never baled it but I find it in places where it should not be. I think it goes throught the cow and comes up in the cow manure if the conditions are right and it is not fully digested . If mesquite beans do this why couldn't grasses and weeds do it also
