Politics could put biolab in Mississippi
Even though it doesn't pencil out on paper as the best site, it appears that politics have boosted Flora, Miss., to top consideration as a site for the new National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is trying to find a replacement for the current Plum Island Animal Disease Center off of Long Island, N.Y. What do they want to put on that island so badly that they're scrambling to find a new spot for the biolab? :???:

Excellent question!

Read the article, it makes some good points about the costs and logistics of operating the facility on the island. On the other hand, I for one am fearful about placing a facility like this in closer proximity to many of our livestock species, despite their assurances that these diseases will be adequately contained
