Wildlife close to home

Dog tree'd or staired it, down the basement stairwell this morning. Then it got on windowsill like a cat later in the day.

A chance its sick. Its odd that its even out of its den in this weather, unless the rut starts earlier down there. Personally, I'd sooner find a rat than a coon. But that one especially probably needs shot and buried. Just in case.

Not always a case of disease, unless ya call hunger/laziness a disease.

We had both a coon and a possum that came up from the woods on the front porch every night and ate from the dog food bowl even with us sitting 4-5 ft away. Did that for months. Didn't seem to bother the dogs but the cat was terrified of them.

We've had a couple foxes come up and eat out of the cat food pan every night for while a few years ago. Finally quit feeding cats there and now just put out enough feed for the two cats we have now to finish off and not have extra left.

I was camping at a dark campground one night and a fox got on the table while I was eating.

Another time in the redwood country the state had built little cabins for people to stay in all down a forested hillside under the big trees One night my sister, SIL and their baby and I were sitting on the porch. Suddenly the whole camp ground started hollering BEAR! And down the hill ran a big black bear with a shirtless man chasing him, arms over his head screaming YAAAAA!. My sister jumped up, grabbed the baby, ran inside and locked the door.

In January 2022 I shot a cougar at the end of our driveway. Seen lion tracks in the snow a lot closer than that. A pack of coyotes killed a deer in my backyard. Wolf killed 2 weaned calves about 200 yards from the house. Somewhere here is a tablet with all the different species of wildlife we have seen looking out our window. It was up to 53 without counting song birds. There is lots of wildlife here. This little 4 point is about 40 feet from the house.

The fire brought down a lot of wildlife. There is no where left for them in the hills. So this evening I had 2 people tell me that they saw a black bear sow with 2 cubs on my property which they saw from the road. A bit ago the dogs were barking in their kennel. The wife went out and shined a flashlight around. Mrs Bear and her 2 cubs are eating windfall apples about 30 feet from our house. I went out and put the light on her. She is the other side of the yard fence . The light didn't seem to bother her at all. Maybe she wants me to come out and hold the light for her so she can find the apples easier.

I have reason to believe an elk is the vandal that tore up some electric fence and created a mudhole/wallow a couple days ago.

Seems like Jan/Feb time of year if I remember right
