I need information on Wheat hay. Is Wheat hay good for livestock, is there any precautions I need to know about Wheat hay? Any opinion will be appreciated.
Thank you, Kerley

Wheat can make a good hay with good amounts of protien and good tdn. If it was stressed while growing, such as a drought, i would have it tested for high levels of nitrates. It can still be fed to cattle, just ease them on it by feeding with other hay for a few weeks.

Should not be fed to horses, there is a ergot that can be on it and can kill horses. I have known people who have fed it with no problems but I also know one guy to lost a whole bunch from feeding it.

Awnless(non bearded) is better. Ergot is bad for cattle too. Makes excellent haylage mixed with peas.
