What is a palpatation cage?

Help Support CattleToday:

A palp cage is a secure area where the vet or you can get in behind the chute to preg test or semen test animals and be safe from the animals behind you in the alley.
You can build one very inexpensively. If i have a pic i will post in a second

It's so that the vet can easily access the back end of a cow to preg check her and be safe from the cows behind in the chute. Other uses besides this one also, easy access for castrating, AI, anything needed to be done at the back end of a cow. They offer ease and safety while doing what ever needs to be done back there.

Okay, here is my best way to explain since it is not a great shot

There is a big post (rail way tie) riight behind the chute. Then you will see a green gate. That gate swings into the alley and is as wide as the alley. We welded a pin on to the gate and drilled a hole so the pin could secure the gate and the vet is safe from the animals behind her. The palp cage is made with four rail ties, and then lined with 2x6's on the one side and the gate on the other. The squeeze chute is chained at the floor posts to the ties.
Clear as mud?
