Alright so we're going to AI our heifers using Simmental bulls any resulting heifers would be kept so we want good maternal traits. How about select sires Uno mas or ABS Big casino? I just started AI ing at last year so I don't get it all ? Thanks, Joe

I have one heifer from Uno Mas, I haven't calved her yet, but I have 8 from a Dream On son. All good heifers, good frame size, fert., not heavy milkers but get the job done.
Liked those heifers enough to buy a Dream On grand-son to hopefully get some more.

Keeping heifers...I'd want API as high as I could get it.
Look at After Shock(ABS) you oughta get good maternal traits, along with good calving ease - but also good growth, carcass (REA/Mrb), tenderness, and good API/TI.

We have one Big Casino on the ground this year. 61# heifer calf out of a PB Registered Angus cow. Calved 1 day early. Used him on set of custom AI 2 yr old first calf heifers last year and they calved ok.
Number indicate he will work and we may try him on few heifers this year.

I'd use Stetson before Uno Mas, and you would have to ask your rep to ask the office but if they have any Jumpstart left he is as good as a calving ease in the Simmental breed that's homo black and homo polled that I've been around.

Dream on is just that for me no way can I justify $100 a straw I'll look at Stetson I like the look of After Shock. Joe

I like High Roller(Genex), I have a couple of young cows that are doing really well so far. We're going to try All Around(Genex) this year for a little more growth. We also have a couple really good producing Goldmine(ABS) daughters and 1 very good SureBet(ABS) daughter that I like.
I to will second looking for a good API heifer bull. I don't think you need to be number chaser but take a look at the how they rank.... Top 25%, 10%.... Loads of option. The 2 mentioned are still good bulls. Big Casino would not be my first pic if you looking for heifers to keep but he could be a good balance if your herd is already loaded with maternal. Still a very bull.

Why would Big Casino daughters not be a top pick for replacements? His dam raised 10 calves. His Maternal Weaning Weight numbers indicate he is in the top 20% of the breed. Yes he has lower milk numbers but that's not always a bad thing?

High Roller's dam only raised 5 natural calves but is a heck of a donor cow. All Around's dam also only has raised 4 calves. Personally I like selecting bulls that their dam has done it time and time again.

For High Roller I'm just going off of his numbers and what I have at home. For Big Casino I'm just going off the numbers. He may be much better then his numbers also. That happens. When your looking through Sire catalogs you only get numbers and not the dam's production. I would agree, that is a good criteria to use. So I'm defiantly not disagreeing with your thinking TH.

My go to calving ease bulls for heifers are Uno Mas, and Broadway (select sires). We also like using Built Right, but his Semen is getting high now that he is dead. Genex has a bull called NightRide or something like that that has fantastic numbers, but I heard the calves are a bit disappointing when viewed from the rear. We used Ironhide on a bunch, his numbers look like they would work for us (also Genex bull).
