For purposes of this poll lets assume we are all talking about adult bulls. Come breeding time, what do you want your herdsire(s) to weigh?

i feel like for my cows anything over 2000 lbs is just too much bull. i would rather a bull be around 1800lbs. I'd rather have an athletic bull than the winner of a cake eating contest as well. your thoughts?

i just realized my "more than 2401" option did not show up. must have forgot to submit it.

I think that would depend on your cows and what your end product is going to be. To me, if a bull gets to be twice the size of your cows, it's too big.

What do your cows weigh? I don't remember the exact weight of our last herd bull, but I do know it was better than 2000 lbs. Our cows weigh around 1200 lbs, and we had very few calving problems with him.

my cows weigh 700-1100. sold a 1300 one time.average is probably 900, maybe. i'm not concerned with calving ease since most of these girls can pass a buick. but i dont want them crippled up during breeding. big bulls tend to go down in this heat. for me a 1600-1800 is most efficient.

For me it depends on the cow. Most all of my cows can handle an 2000-2500# bull with know problem. My personal prefance is 1800-2000#.

Our cows will average 1075 lbs. The bull we used on them weighed 1600 to 1800 this past year. In his prime he weighed more and we had no problems with him. I prefer 1800 to 2000.

My bull weighed in at 2200 and covered the 900lb heifers no problems.

If he is athletic and in good shape there are no problems. If he has to climb and paw his was on the cow...then there are issues.

I've had plenty of bulls that were 2000+ with an athletic build

I voted 1800-2000, but 2000-2200 is fine, too. Our cows are in the 1100-1300 range, most being closer to 1100.

Ok MikeC I will play along :

2560# (10/9/06) as a 6 yr old no more no less..

About being too big, I have seen a 1600# bull breed harder than 2300# bull. That has to be considered as well.

Classic !!

And on a Beefy survey!

Came back, read Macons post and realized I was laughing too hard to submit something useable. My last/first herdsire was taken to the salesbarn at the end of a drought summer and after covering 35 or so. On the scales there he was just over 1900lbs. So I submitted in the 2000+ range.

He never left anything open and never any injuries, so I guess he was athletic!

glover, great line. I think you maybe should use the weight of the semen tank holding the semen. that is where the reproduction comes from. If your answer is still your arm, I will leave that one alone. LOL
my herdsire now is around 2100 lbs. he is almost 4. he is kept a little on the fat side because of natural service and semen production 2=times a year. he will probably finish out at around 2250 or so. I was at a ranch in Texas and was in AWW of this animal that looked like a truck. he was around 2600 and they said he was a little light because of a foot problem. the bull had to be over 10 foot in length and 5 foot tall at the shoulder. a touch to big for my cows.

I like mine 2239 lbs. No more and no less.

Maintaining that exact weight has to be a great time-consumer, and a major undertaking. You really must share your secrets of success one of these days.

2239 lbs. was the average weight of my bulls that got de-wormed and weighed last week.

Success has nothing to do with it. ;-)
