Weighing Calves

Help Support CattleToday:

Our calves (Dexters) are generally pretty small, 45# or so, so we use the bathroom scale with a small sheet of plywood underneath...the largest we've had was 70# and that's a BIG calf for a Dexter.

eyeball... thats my scales.. haha
I dont have the time.. nor take the time to weigh all my calves...

I've used the weight tape -- it's been accurate to about 50 lbs. The steers in the past we've taken to butcher I would put the tape on them -- tape would be off about 50 to 75 lbs. OF course the trip in the trailer they usually crap out a good 25 lbs. hehehe!

I used it monthly - get a good idea what each head avg daily weight gain is.

I use a MTI-500-WB indicator and 2 load bars for all of my weighing. Paid $940 (including shipping) for it new 2 years ago. It's been accurate to within a pound or two whenever I've checked it, and I've been very satisfied.
