The U.S. Cattlemen's Association is proud to launch its Beef Checkoff Initiative, urging Congress to amend
the Beef Promotion Act to allow checkoff funds to promote U.S. Beef. The U.S. Cattlemen's Association
supports the beef checkoff. However, it's time to update a 25 year-old law that prohibits domestic cattle
producers from promoting U.S. beef.
A recently completed Gallup Survey of 8,000 cattle producers shows that an overwhelming majority of U.S.
cattle producers want their mandatory checkoff dollars dedicated to promoting U.S. born, raised and processed
beef. (To view the results of the Gallup Survey, visit the U.S. Cattlemen's Association web site at www.
uscattlemen.org and click on the Virtual Checkoff Library).
Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling is scheduled for implementation in September 2008, and it appears
very likely that cattle producers will have the opportunity to distinguish their product from that of imported
product in retail cases.
It makes sense then that the Beef Promotion Act, enacted by Congress in 1985, be amended to permit U.S.
cattle producers to dedicate the funds they pay into the mandatory program to promote domestic product.
As currently written, funds collected under the Beef Promotion Act must be used to promote both foreign
and domestic beef. That's what the U.S. Cattlemen's Association seeks to change.
We need your help to send a strong message to Congress. The U.S. Cattlemen's Association encourages you
to sign the attached letter urging Congress to amend and update the Beef Promotion Act, giving U.S. cattle
producers the right to use their own money to promote their product.
There has never been a better opportunity to seek this legislative change to the Beef Act. We have a friendly
Congress that is willing to listen and act. It is imperative, however, that we unify our voice in this endeavor.
If you, like thousands of other producers across the country, believe that mandatory beef checkoff funds
should be allowed to promote domestic beef, please sign the attached letter and provide all the information
requested. These documents will be forwarded to Congress, sending a strong signal that cattle producers are
unified in their desire to see the Beef Act amended.
If you'd like more information about how you can participate by circulating the letter for signatures,
please contact Jim Hanna, U.S. Cattlemen's Association Director and Checkoff Committee Chairman at
308/748-2233.

I never seen check off dollars ads saying buy some one else beef

The beef checkoff advertises "generic beef"- which includes beef from 40+ countries, which competes against US beef...It is no different than Chrysler or Ford using their advertising and promotion money to advertise just cars or trucks-- and having it help sell Toyotas-- not promoting their individual product...

The checkoff is 20+ years old and was written back at a time when there was much less beef being imported- when most was US beef...It is outdated and needs to be brought up to the times...

Australia and Canada are agressively using their checkoff funding to promote Australian and Canadian beef- their own products...The US checkoff needs to be changed to go along with the US M-COOL which will become law in 08- and promote our US BEEF- born, raised, and slaughtered just like 92% of the checkoff payers polled by the USDA requested.....

I'm not against promoting USA Beef I was just saying I never seen check off dollar Ads promoting Canadian or Australian or any other 40+ countries I always hear them finding new cuts of meat and how to prepare the meat properly and stuff along those lines Im for promo USA Beef check off money is already manditorey so it should be promoting producers who pay the check off $

The question is how to eliminate the check off from non US born , raised and slaughtered beef. Afterall why should i as a canadian producer pay for the US to promote their product and descriminate against mine. If you guys want to promote beef who will pay the check off? IF you want to only promote US born raised and slaughtered beef with it the check off money it should only come from cattle born raised and slaughtered in the US. Just remember you are playing with a double edged sword be careful you guys don't cut yourselves,

Already been figured out Saksartoon-- The checkoff on all imported cattle/beef is collected when they cross the border by the Immigration and Customs folks now-- so all that "furrin" money can be used for beef development and research projects-- while that collected from the States can be used for promotion with the emphasis on using it to promote USA BEEF, born-raised-slaughtered....

I talked to the former CEO of the Checkoff, Monte Reese, a couple of years ago-- and he said this would be no problem, as they are set up to do it already- only takes the Congress to change the law to allow the funding to be used that way....

And he said it would stand up to a Canadians crying and whining in a court of law about being descriminated against ;-)

Keep it up r-calf maybe you guys can put everyone out of business and have people eating chicken for every meal.
