"Supplement and vaccinate to prevent calf scours
The immediate impacts of this winter's snow storms, including widespread death loss among stranded cattle, have been widely reported. Continuing problems, however, could emerge this spring as calving season approaches across affected regions. Veterinarian Rick Sibbel, director of Global Ruminant Technical Services for Schering-Plough Animal Health, notes that when pastures and rangeland are covered with deep snow for extended time, cows can lose body condition quickly. Without adequate supplementation, nutritional deficiencies in the cow herd could lead to calving difficulties and lower quantity and quality of colostrum. Insufficient immunity among calves can lead to a high incidence of scours and other health problems. Sibbel encourages ranchers in snow-covered areas to find ways to provide supplements to their cows beginning six to eight weeks prior to calving. He also stresses that poor cow nutrition increases the importance of using a scours vaccine prior to calving to help minimize losses in this year’s calf crop. For more, go to: http://www.drovers.com.
