Using Electrolytes

What is a prudent use of electrolytes? Is there an age when the calf should not be given them? What do electrolytes do for a calf system? Is there any benefit of giving electrolytes, such as an added boost, just for something to do more than what the mama cow can do?

Electrolytes are replacement salts for the body, especially with heat stress or diarrhea/dehydration. If you just drink water at those times, there is not necessarily adequate absorption. Electrolytes can improve hydration faster and will improve the electrolyte balance WHEN USED CORRECTLY. Do not give them everyday for fun. Mix properly, according to instructions. They can cause problems if given too strong. Different products have different balances. Know what you're doing when you do it, because they can also do harm. Ask your vet. V
