Bek its called the Laidley Sale because thats where it was initially held. I know what you mean about the Laidley yards,I've bought cattle there,they are pretty old.Silverdale has brand new yards which are getting better each time I go there. I've bought cattle there too.
I'm having lunch with Helen's family at our place,my boys will be here a couple of days after Christmas.There's another Brahman sale at Silverdale in March its called The Fassifern Valley Elite Female Sale. Its only for invited vendors. Its a bit of an insult for those that were not invited. Any way there's another "elite" female sale in Toowoomba in April that any one can attend. The Silverdale sale will probably be too overpriced like the Gympie Brahman sale is in June.Enjoy your Rathdowney holiday its nice there.

Yeah I figured that's why it'd be called that.

I agree about Silverdale, it's really looking good at the moment, and Laidley is just Blah.

And yes Rathdowney is nice, my grandfather(may he R.I.P.) so there's a pretty strong sentimental connection for my family. We camp down at Andrew Drynan Park on Running Creek Road/Lions Road which leads up to the border, We may take a trip to Kyogle aswell seeing as it's not that far.

I used to show at Kyogle a few years back. Won a couple of Brahman champions back in the early 80's. Used to be a very friendly nice show to attend. Just starting to get a few show schedules arrive. Toowoomba Royal has a Brahman Feature Show which I might take a small team to.May take the South Devons too,who knows.

I was wondering what was the feature at Toowoomba Royal was for next year, now I know. I'm not sure if I'll be up there now, only if I go with school which is a fairly small chance. As my boss' wife's baby is due that exact weekend there's a fairly strong chance we won't be going. However I liked going this year so I might go with school.

Toowoomba's a nice show. It doesn't have the glitz and glamour of the major royals yet when you do well there, there's still a great sense of pride from it.

Gah I just found a little twist in my plan. I found out that I'm no longer able to show for school anymore, which is a good thing in one way, because of conflict of interest, I was talking to my ag teacher today and he said that so no more school show team.

Hopefully this other Lowline job holds up or I'll be looking for a job for up there to!

He said because I'm showing for other studs, that creates a conflict of interest, which he said makes me ineligible for school show team now. The only reason I was allowed to stay on it for most of this year was because we didn't start showing for other studs until around half way through the season.

Plus no-one else could handle the Droughtmaster heifer I had, she was a nutcase.

Either way our school ag dept. is literally on its last legs and I can't see it lasting any longer anyway.

I think it's fairly stupid, it's not like I'm gunna do something to the school's animals to sabotage their chances of winning, they lose anyway.

I'm not a big fan of my ag teacher :P I prefer the one we had earlier in the year who actually knew a thing or two about cattle(he has a Poll Hereford Stud).
 
Pfftt.... school's and their crappy ag teacher's and programs.... that's why I didn't do ag my last few years of school... too bloody frustrating!!
 
I'm only doing ag coz there's nothing else to do.

My teacher told me I probably wouldn't cope with Ag in Senior so another reason I'm doing it is to stick it up him.

I've got two choices for my Traineeship now, Gympie or Taroom. Both are propertys of second cousins, so at least I know I can trust them.
 
I had a young student working for me,he would never lead for his school again as they had not given him a chance despite winning paraders comps etc.Too many of the ag teachers I have found never have much real cattle knowledge. They often don't breed them even as a hobby. Also I have found often schools are lumbered with breeds that don't have much future or real beef attributes. I have offered quiet already broken in South Devon steers to our local High School,they have never taken me up on the offer,choosing instead to select their own Angus or Murray Grey cross or Charolais cross. I would dearly love a school to have some of my South Devons. Maleny High School have South Devons but started off with stud rejects. From me they would be getting good quality.They have done ok with AI breeding from the donated and sometime bought ones.
I know of one high school here in NSW that had a very good quality herd of Santa Gertrudis,they were tossed when a new teacher came along and suggested Salers,then they went onto Limousin,now they have nothing. Tenterfield High have a Murray Grey Stud,Glen Innes did have ratty Angus (I feel so sorry for the students when they have to wrestle with touchy Angus) I loan them my good old quiet SDs to lead in paraders comps.
Keep your chin up. I love helping young people,because I never had the opportunity when I was starting out.

Colin, I know exactly what you mean about schools and their teachers. That's why I gave up on ag at my school.
It's because of people like you, though, that the beef industry has a younger generation to continue on. The lady I started showing for way back when I started high school, only had a small herd of Shorties, but had such a passion for helping kids get a leg into the industry. If not for her I probably would have lost all interest. Through her I met my current boss, and many of the other influential Shorthorn principals. It is also because of her that I was able to establish my stud, as she offered me a place to agist my cattle. She has fully supported everything I've done since I started, even driving me interstate to competitions when I was younger.
I owe her so much!!
 
I personally wish there were more people like you Colin and the lady you're talking about Carla. We do get animals that the school can borrow however the school doesn't really allow us to do anything constructive. And the animals that we have come to us as fairly high quality but because of our ag department they turn out to be complete duds. I dislocated my wrist earlier in the year because of the animals that the school has, I got my already buggered up knee trampled on. Hopefully through the guys I'm working with now, John with the Dexters, and Ray with the Poll Herefords I can learn something more constructive and hopefully it'll give me more of a boost then i have gotten from school.

Although it was different at my old school, they actually had some animals of high quality, we successfully ran 3 of our own studs. A Red Poll stud, A Droughtmaster stud and a Simmental stud. The Red Polls we bred were the standouts though, we won quite a few Ekka champions with them.

However that school's gone down the tube now that the ag teacher that was there when I was has left.

Like I said, Murphy's Law....

Red Polls when they are good are very good but boy some of them can be very light. They are excellent cattle to cross most breeds over,especially with their good milk and dual purpose attributes. I wonder what you would get if SDs and Red Polls were crossed. Tremendous milk supply I would imagine.I can remember at the North Coast National at Lismore a few years back a lineup of 8 Red Poll cows and calves in a senior class,what a great sight,quality all the way through.Can't say I've seen that class since unfortunately.

I'd actually like to see what a RP x SD cross would turn out like, as you said tremendous milk supply.

I was discussing the ag dept. with my friends today, and we're all in agreement that it's going down very rapdily.
