Texas Longhorn Horns

Help Support CattleToday:

We have longhorns but they rarely hurt each other. Several of the people we work with mix their herds and have had no problems. Are you considering mixing your herd? Longhorns are social creatures so they like company. We have several around us that love to cross their other breed heifers with longhorn bulls and vise versa. Hope this helps.

They use their horns more as tools as weapons. I've seen them do some pretty amazing things with their horns. From moving calves or other things out of their way to bending down a tree limb to scratch their backs. The only time i've seen them use their horns to hurt another animal is when two bulls have gotten into the same pasture and fought for a little while, but thats about it.

We've been running Longhorns for a number of years and have had two negative experiences with the horns. First, had a jack donkey that was too curious of a week old calve and he got punctured in the ribs by the momma...not fatal. The second was a yearling steer that we found in the pasture with half his guts hanging out from a puncture in the stomach...we assumed that he caught a horn...unfortunately had to put him down.
