In January, 2005, Running Arrow Farm was notified by the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) that their registered Longhorn herd is now a TB Accredited and Brucellosis Certified disease free herd.

Two separate herd tests a year apart were required by a TAHC Certified Veterinarian to obtain this herd status. Repeat annual testing hereafter is required to maintain this disease free status.

Were you selected by the state at random to have your herd tested, or did you decide to have the tests done to get accredited?

Just curious about this because some people we know are in the process of testing their herd, and they said they were selected at random by the state to have their herd tested. From what I understand, the state pays for testing, but they had to provide the people to actually gather and work the cattle.

I think the state is randomly selecting for TB testing.

We elected to have our herd tested for marketing and peace of mind issues. Did our first series in December 2003 with second followup Fall, 2004. Annual re-do every year to maintain certification. We don't add any new cattle to our herd unless they come from an Area Free State (with health papers in hand) or unless they have current TB/Brucellosis test done. Our herd is clean; we want to keep it that way.

State paid for TB testing. We paid for Brucellosis testing. For the TB testing requires an innoculation and then a read by the Vet 72 hours later. Brucellosis was one time blood sample---> Lab.

Think we spent about $1000 all total for all our initial (2 test series) certification for 13 of our adult registered seedstock herd for both TB & Brucellosis. Certain animals under age of 18 months did not require testing. New additions brought in will have to be added to our Fall 2005 test protocol, even if they came from an area free State.

The people that get "randomly selected (mandated)" to be tested will just have to face the music.
