SWELLING OF CALF'S JAW

HAVE 4 WEEK OLD BULL CALF THAT HAS SWELLING UNDER LEFT JAW THAT STARTED 7 DAYS AGO.IS SIZE OF BASEBALL AND HAS REMAINED CONSTANT FOR 3 DAYS.HE SHOWS NO OTHER PROBLEMS.HE EATS WELL AND PLAYS WITH OTHER CALVES.ANY SUGGESTIONS? SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT OTHERS?

I am no expert but that sounds like it could be some sort of tumor. I don't think its contagious but I would consult a vet ASAP. Ash

Sounds like a pocket of infection - possibly from a piece of hay or stick that punctured the inside of his mouth. You can leave it alone & it should rupture & drain by itself, or you can catch him & see if it has puss in it (insert a needle & draw out any liquid) - if it is infected, you can cut a hole triangle shaped on the bottom of the lump deep enough so that it will drain. Flush it out with an antibiotic & spray blu-Kote on it or something to keep blow-flies away. Watch closely, whether it ruptures on its own or you lance it, for maggots. Jeanne
