I have an angus bull and someone wants to pay me to take it to his farm for a couple months to breed his cows. Does anybody know how much I should charge?

Probably can't help you with cost of breeding information, but here's my experience (in reverse). A few years back, I took a heifer to someone for breeding to their bull. Their requirements were:

Vacc. with IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, 5-way lepto within previous 12 months
Negative fecal or proof of deworming w/in 30 days of arrival and lice treatment w/in 30 days
Negative test for TB, brucellosis, leukosis and anaplasmosis w/in prior 60 days
Negative ELISA Johnes w/in prior 60 days

Sharing bulls can be risky. How concerned are you with what your bull might pick up and bring back to your herd? Agree in writing to the possible "what if's" (bull gets out or injured, things like that). Just something to think about.

I'm sorry JP, I would not do it for any price. Just too risky. I value my cattle and my management of my cattle too much to take the chance. This is just my opinion though.

I wouldn't lease or loan a bull, it only takes one Trich infected cow to ruin a good bull, I know my herd is clean and if my bull gets hurt it is on me. If your friend doesn't have enough cows to purchase a bull then he should consider finding a good AI tech. I did a blog a few months back on Trich you might want to look at it.

Double Ditto!!!!!

Around my area the going price seems to be $300 for renting a decent bull. But I would only rent to people that I know and feel comfortable with their herd health.
