So I've been trying to explain to a dairy friend (upgrading facilities) how a feedlot sorting alley works. There's a serious lack of decent sorting videos on YouTube - so - those of you who know how these work and those of you who don't, would you be willing to do me a favor, view the videos and let me know if this is clear? They're both under 30 seconds. No, they aren't real cows but I sure had fun with Photoshop - I don't get out of school often enough to get good videos of real cows.

Appreciate it.

They're clear enough for a beginner to see the difference and get their brains working. Most dairies have sorting alleys built in if they have back fences in their lanes.
For a dairy situation I have one customer who has a four foot wide alley where the cows exit the barn into the alley that leads back to the freestall barn with a catch pen directly across from that alley. He can put one guy with a clipboard right in front of that alley and sort "in and by" and still has a catch pen for anything not on his list. It's pretty slick. Think of a four way intersection where all of the traffic comes from one direction and a traffic cop stands in the middle of the intersection and directs traffic and you'll see what I mean.

That does sound pretty slick CP.

Those of you with sorting alleys - what width did you make them? I'm used to working horseback with hot cattle and would probably make them wider than someone on foot with calm cattle needs. I've seen everything from 10 to 16' recommended.

Depends on how many cattle you're jamming thru at once. I use 8ft for alleyways and a 10ft sweep tub. that'll handle 10-15 feeders at a time between the 2.
