Snake Salvation

I'd have to start attending church with my bible in one hand and a garden hoe in the other.
God shoulda made all snakes like this one--a natural "Cut Here" line.

I know--harmless but will be even more harmless if I ever see one.

What is that snake greybeard?

I guess I'm too much of a free thinker...lol.

Those who take the Bible (or any other religious document) "literally" deserve what they get. IMO a lot of the Christian Bible's passages are parables, metaphors, and the like for those who are more insightful and logical to interpret the messages "behind the scenes" and the hidden meanings...not the "obvious" sayings, writings. Also, radical cult preachers are just that... Another example: Incest, adultery, fornication are against God's laws: On the other hand, how did Adam and Eve "propagate the Earth" without interbreeding???

There are many instances of "questionable" reportings, IMO: Eg., someone living many hundreds of years; Lott's wife turning into a pillar of salt; Sampson's arms long and strong enough to pull down stone pillers to crash a temple....etc., etc. A virgin birth, etc.

I hope my "logical" comments don't get me banned from this forum...

Do you believe the first 4 words of scripture?? "In the beginning GOD" :!: :!:

GB, as Red Skelton would say, "You are a mean, mean, mean man." Don't kill every little snake you see!!! I understand not wanting venomous snakes where they can do harm but let some of these fascinating creatures share our world with us. You mean, mean, mean man.

Do you remember that Red Skelton episode where the villian has "Freddie The Freeloader" in a stretch torture device? The villian has Freddie stretched out about 20 feet and all Freddie says is, "You are a mean, mean, mean man!" I don't think they ever made another Red.

I can't speek for anyone else, but after considering his post, I'm guessing that if he can't believe the things he mentioned, then he must not believe the first 4 words.

In matters of "faith", my opinion is you go whole hog or not at all. Otherwise, life is more fun as a Pagan or hedonist. :D
Taking TB's point one step further: If you have faith in the veracity of those first 4 words, it is a small "leap of faith" to accept the mysteries you used as examples.

BTW: For me it is not a matter of being "a free thinker" or "logical". I have innate "skeptic" tendencies. My mother once said to me when I was pre-school, "You are a doubting Thomas." I am convinced that my father had the same "genetic" predisposition. He could be quite rude exercising that trait.

Great comments R.A.B.!! Don't let the literalists drag you down. It seems like every religious organization has their own individual signature so there's something out there for everyone.

Neat looking snake! Non-poisonous too! I wonder if the snake worshippers also speak in tongues and go into physical spasms on the floor.

Literalist- adherence to the exact letter or the literal sense, as in translation or interpretation: to interpret the law with uncompromising literalism.

I finally got called a name I can be proud of.

is snake venom worse than brown recluse spider bite ?
I don't know and am not curious enough to want to find out. :hide:

Venomous snakes have a wide variety of venom types. Venoms are usually complex proteins or enzymes and combinations of the two. In general, venoms are of three types: histolytic (breaks down tissues), haemolytic (breaks down red blood cells), or neurotoxic (paralyzes the nervous system). The gaboon viper is unique in that it has all three and is ranked as one of the 2 or 3 most deadly venomous snakes in the world. Spiders have a similar venom as snakes.

The lethal character of a venom depends on the amount of venom a snake is capable of injecting and the drop for drop toxicity. For example, a snake may be more lethal if it injects more venom albeit of a lower toxicity.

How do you determine which should be taken literally. Oh and those tongues...they are "unknown" tongues. aka jibberish...nobody understands them, not even God. Floor spasms can usually be cured with a good swift kick in the ass.

I've tried 1/2 the equation, don't want to experience the other 1/2. I've been bit and stung by lots of things in my life and had lots of things stuck in me. Nothing comes close to a snake bite, it's instant and will take you to your knees.

Ryder, it's just not as bad as it seems. A lot folks are afraid of what they don't understand and add to that about a dozen scriptures mentioning snakes/serpents then all of the sudden all snakes are bad. But, in realty, most snakes get rid of things like mice and rats that carry diseases. The snakes don't transmit those diseases even after they have consumed a mouse or rat with a disease. And, most snakes in the US do not attack humans without a reason. I stepped on a Copperhead and got bit. Most will try to get away from you when they have the chance. If a person can identify what their looking at before deciding to kill it, they might just just create an opportunity to get rid of some rats and mice.
