Say WHAT? $1,000 calves and $1,000 cull cows ??????????

I don't think so. Up yes, but not that high.

It's one thing to be cautious, but it's another thing to be so cynical that you miss taking advantage of an opportunity," says Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension livestock marketing specialist. "This is a different business now. I think we've turned the corner."
In fact, as Peel visits with producers and speaks at meetings these days, he's telling producers to count on $1,000 calves and $1,000 cull cows for the next five years.
"If you're going to be in this business, now is the time for producers to take the reins," Peel says. "The only producers who will be hurt by this upward shift in the market are those who wait three years and then decide to start expanding."

Neighbor sold $1400 culls and $1200 calves last fall. Mind you they weren't what you would call moderate cattle.

My steer calves averaged almost $1000 last August.

And bulls are high too. I sold an old Hereford a week or so ago at the auction barn. 1700lbs at $1.03. That totaled $1.00 more than I paid for him when I bought him from the breeder in December 2008.

Reports down here show packer cows up to $1.00 a pound and bulls up to $1.20...450 calves at #2.50 Doesn't take much of a cow, bull or calf to bring $1,000. One big bull would "ring the bell" as they say.

From what I read, is that he is stating that for the next 5 years to EXPECT the $1,000 calves and $1,000 cull cows to continue, and not go down.
I was offered $1250 for some of my replacement Limflex heifers that are only 14 months old. Hard to turn down, but in the long haul, they are going to hopefully make me more than that, after two calvings.

Nobody can predict the market that far in the future. Anything could happen------terror attacks, stock market drop, bse scare. I have noticed over the years, that what my weaned calves bring, is usually in line with my pound cows on a gross basis. You get enough head, and you have to look at annual sales/net profit.

I sold a cull cow that lost a calf a month or two ago and she brought over a thousand....can't remember the particulars now....
