Got some questions about retained ownership. So with retained owner ship you own the cattle until they are slaughtered? And you get paid by the live weight? Or hanging weight?

And how do you go about entering your cattle into a retained owner ship program?

Each program can be different. Cornell Univ used to have a retained ownership feedlot program, so that producers had the opportunity to get carcass data on their calves. We were paid on hanging carcass. There will be health requirements before delivery. I think most of them, you pay some on entry, and the rest you pay in maybe monthly feed and facility payments. They will charge for any vet work/meds if they have to treat them.

Or you have enough cattle for a pen (usually 100 head) and find a feedlot that will custom feed them for you. You can either pay for feeding cost as you go or they will deduct them from your check when the cattle are processed. I know 6 or 7 people who do this. Some years it pays to do it, some years it doesn't.
