My luck hasnt been good these past weeks with my cows. Anyway I checked my herd tonight to find one of my cows who has a 5 month old calf has prolapsed. Her calf has a large swelled up balloon type knot on his back thigh. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHATS GOING ON? I plan on calling the vet tomorrow. Is it blackleg?

thanks
DEB

Unless you know how to disinfect, replace, stitch a prolapse, I believe I would have already called the vet! As far as the calf, I seriously doubt it is blackleg. Based on your description, it is far more likely it is an abcess or possibly a hematoma.

The vet came out today and fixed the prolapsed cow, fortunately I caught it early. As for the calf is was a absess which vet cut and let drain. Just relieved and can sleep tonight.

Thanks for your concern.

Didn't the vet find it strange that a cow with a 5 month calf would "prolapse"? Was it a vaginal prolapse?

You will prolly need to sell her as the chances of her doing it again are real good.
