You guys should load up and bring your hay to south central Texas. Around here, 5 x 5 1/2 coastal rolls are $65 - $80. And everybody feels fortunate to get it that cheap.

That's what they were asking for it aroudn here til the rains started in Sept. If they still want that for it I hope THEY have to eat it.

East Coast (Massachusetts)
700# round bales first and second cut- $45-$60
40# Square bales first and second cut $5-$6.50 per bale

Our 2009 season fertilized weed-free bermuda or wheat/rye round bales for 5x6 running between $58 and $68 a bale delivered. Alfalfa and bermuda small squares 60# between $6.50 and $8.50 delivered and stacked in our barn. We test all loads of bermuda: buying 12 to 15% CP.

Anything less cost in these parts is nothing but low protein junk hay.

Since we don't feed cubes or urea enhanced molasses tubs, we have to get high protein hay. Less effort on our part to manage our feeding program. However, we do use quality mineral/molasses tubs that don't have urea in them (and/or) grain-based products (or) no cottonseed products.

Three years ago we were gouged from some "local" suppliers with $75 to $110. 5x6 round bales with marginal protein...those suppliers never got another chance with us! Guess they figured we had money to burn...lol...and were desperate.

Now, we test all hay deliveries. Based on our previous experiences, we no longer trust any supplier to deliver what they claim.

Bill this little $12-15 cost per test will save or make you about as much money as anything you can do especially if you're testing prior to purchase and can use the test results to negotiate price. With hay like that there is no need for protein supplementation of any kind.

As I said once before "It all looks good in a bale".
