I have a brahma cross cow
that I believe may be developing
pinkeye. I have never had a cow
with pinkeye b-4, but this one has
a lot of light red/pink in the white part of
one of her eyes. This is pinkeye,
right? There is no weeping around the
eye. Is there any treatment for this other
than the patch or a shot? I was hoping there
was something I could put in her feed to help
clear this up.

So if the eye looks fine other than some pink
in the white of the eye, and there is no watering
of the eye, it probably isn't pinkeye?

i wouldn't know without seeing it

there is a good online vet manual right here >http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp
it is in no way substitute for a vet if'n one is needed.
also the search feature at cattle today works quite well for questions, probably faster results that way.
also the google image search will give good results for pictures
if'n you wanna see a pic of pinkeye.

and it is contagious

There is always watering of the eye with pinkeye. And it is very contagious! I got it once and all I was doing was holding the calf so hubby could doctor it. We use powder in the eye. I would ask a vet to look at it but I'm thinking injury. Could have gotten dirt in it or poked it on grass/hay or something. I just think it got irritated by something.

if its not watering, what made you notice it? was she squinting it or rubbing it? Brahman crosses are pretty darn resistant to pinkeye. what else does she have in her? any hereford? approximately how much brahman is she? i'm going to go with irritated too until we get more info.

Probably has been irratated by the winter pasture grasses going to seed in our area right now. Don't you believe that cow flop about Bramers and in Herefords on pinkeye. Pinkeye is caused by a herd management problem or a lack of I should say. Pinkeye is contagious no matter the breed.

Well said Caustic. Some breeds may a little less supseptible to it, but none are immune to it.Management is a major key to it's prevention.

Curretnly we have a few weepy eyes, but there isn;t a problem with the eyes themselves. Dust and pollen affect cattle the same as humans, some are more suseptible and some less. If it's a single eye I tend to think trauma, if it's both I tend to think in terms of environmental and beyond my control, i.e. pollen, dust, whatever. This time of year the pastures are short enough that other then some weeds there isn;t anything going to seed.

dun

With all the wind lately, we have a fair # of weepy eyes here. About the pollen...you think ADVAIR will come out with a nasal spray for cattle?

dont mean to sound stupid but what kind of herd management problems causes pinkeye

I really am not sure what else
this brahma is crossed with. If I had
to guess I would say 2/3-3/4 Brahma.
I really don't think any Hereford.
I bought her from someone
I worked with 2 years ago.

The person at my feedstore gave me a powder
to put in her eyes with a puffer. Also said the
mastitis medicine would clear pinkeye. I am waiting
to use this since there is no watering of the eyes and
I don't know if it is pinkeye for sure.

This is the same cow I asked about several
weeks ago about her calf not really wanting
to nurse and her not having much milk. I first
noticed the red in her eye when I was trying to get
her calf to take a bottle. I was keeping a real close eye
on her so that she didn't decide to run me over. At that
time I assumed that the red in her eye was from the
stress/ pain from calving! :) I really didn't think too much
of it. I was more concerned with the health of her calf. It
is doing great by the way. Moma cow still doesn't have much
milk and the calf isn't feeling out very quick, but I expect
it to when it really figures out what feed is.

I am also wondering what kind of herd management failures
would result in pinkeye. Beyond keeping them fed well, keeping
minerals out and worming them once or twice a year, I really
don't know what else I should do.

1 more thing. Her calf is only about 1 month old and
yesterday I noticed that she was about to breed back.
Breeding back so soon would be an indication of good
health,wouldn't it?

What part of East Texas are you in makes a big difference, East Texas is from Beaumont to up there with them Yankees on the Red River. Parts of East Texas grass is waist high right now others are needing rain.

cowfarmer there is pinkeye vaccines nowdays. it's only about 85 cents per haid to vaccinate for it. i'm going to start using it myself.
bif
