numbering system each calf

Help Support CattleToday:

I use the system of 2006 calf first calf born would be 61, next 62, etc... On the top of the tag i put the dam # and below the calf # i put the birthdate. I also put the birthdate on the back. I like to use the large tags, that way they are very legible. The look funny on small calves but thats not something that I worry about

teh number for 06 is "S". we use the cow family. 820 or 99 or whatever there number is. then S and then number them 1 and up. so you would have 820s5 would be a calf from 820 born in 2006 and we put the mom's tag on the bottom of the tag and the sire's abbreviated letters in the top of the ear tag. I have been taking a dremel tule and engraving what you want the tag to read. then using a ear tag paint marker to fill in the engraved section. I don't know if the tag soaks up the ink more or if they don't rub it on stuff and it doesn;t fade but it works so much better for us.
