Long's weekly comments:

Mississippi State now has only one win against a team ranked in the Top 25, but the committee has stuck by the Bulldogs, who play another Top 25 team this week, Mississippi.

"They're holding strong where they're located now," Long said of the Bulldogs. "While they only have, (as) currently ranked, one Top 25 win, they do have wins over teams that were previously in the Top 25. The committee takes that into account, they view those teams as when they were played and when those games were played.

"It's not a criteria but we certainly discuss and know when a team was previously ranked in the Top 25."

UCLA was the highest ranked team to move up this week and also is the highest ranked two-loss team. "UCLA has made a strong move for us," Long said. "They have substantial wins against Top 25. They do have two losses and you know what, they're quality losses. All of those things are what have propelled them up to that No. 8 position they currently hold."

Florida State is No. 3 for the third consecutive week despite being one of two unbeaten teams in FBS. The main reason is Florida State's tendency to play close games or even have to rally to win against inferior opponents.

"I think there are a number of committee members who look at them and see a team that has not controlled the games they've played in — that's a term we used last week," Long said.

"I think there are a number of committee members who look at them and see a team that has come-from-behind victories (and think) that's a flaw in Florida State. But there are other committee members who think that they just keep winning. The sign of a quality team is that they can come back and win."

"Boise State, we feel like their strength of schedule is far and away better and stronger than Marshall's," said Jeff Long, the selection committee chair. "They've got a number of teams they've beaten with .500 records or above. Marshall has two wins over teams with .500 records or above. Those are some of the factors."

All will likely change this time next week.
