New Hereford boys

Well, they may not be the best bulls in the world, but I think they are pretty nice. I wouldn't say they are sway backed in fact when you see them in person they have great tops. The 172 bull is a little weaker through the hind quarter than the the 141 but they both carry nice width all the way down their frame. I really like the frame on these bulls. I am putting them on medium/large Brangus mommas so I wanted to select bulls that would complement the frame of the females. I expect these bulls to take just a little frame off of the biggest mommas and maintain the medium size that I prefer. I am trying to raise replacements and I am excited to see the heifers that these guys will produce. Over all I think these 2 are a good like pair and they should hold up well in our tough country.

An entirely accurate assessment I would say!
Too many people find faults for the sake of finding faults!
Over here you can tell which kids and later on adults that have been taught to judge cattle by cattlemen and those that learnt for an inexperienced school teacher. Not saying that definately applies here but some people are just to quick to punch holes in other peoples cattle!

Thank you. I thought I was the only one that felt that way. That said, the fact is if you post pictures of your cattle there will be criticism. Sometimes it's warranted, sometimes not. Sometimes the criticism is a genuine effort to help, sometimes not. Some folks take criticism well, some don't. Once you've been here long enough you'll find it easier to sort it all out.

VanC I agree with what you're saying and I get your point. It just surprises me how quick people are to be negative and in my opinion I think so often they are off the mark. I really think some people are seeing things that aren't there!

That is the thing I hate about pictures? In person is so much better.

I was thinking about putting up some pics of a young bull when i wean him in a few months to get some thoughts but I'm better off getting a few different people to come see him in the flesh

I really wasn't looking for a critique of the bulls, but I'm not offended. Every one is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not trying to suit anyone's taste but my own. I know they are nice bulls and any body who knows commercial bulls would say the same. I'm lucky enough to be within spitting distance of several of the best Hereford breeders in Texas so if these don't work out I can try some more.

While I agree hereford bulls on brangus cows make a lot of sense I feel that these two bulls isn't the ideal type to use on brangus type cows, especially if the goal is to breed replacement heifers. I more powerful, earlier maturing type with more bone and thickness is the direction I would have gone.

In my honest opinion these guys are good honest young bulls judging by the PHOTOS provided! And I'm not saying they are bad pics either, just that it is possible for an animal to look very different in a pic.
I see no real flaws in these bulls. Can anyone show me a flawless bull that suits every herd anywhere in the world?
I think too many people here see problems that don't exist in the animals they are commenting on. Often the animal is out in the paddock just doing its thing, not standing posed like a show animal!
I think these are 2 great young bulls, plenty of growth and still showing growth, good thick hind quarters and look well put together!

Amen :tiphat: ! I made the mistake of posting some pictures on here once and was LIT up because they weren't standing right. They were cows on winter pasture making a living, not some show crap. There are lots of good things on this board which I like to read, and there are lots of armchair cowboys :bs: or 20 cow owners shooting their mouths off too. I make a living with my cattle, I know what works in my world. There are NO perfect cattle! Pick for balance and what works in your area. Those bulls are good bulls that I wouldn't hesitate to use on my angus cows. :2cents:

I have seen some pretty crappy pictures of some pretty crappy cattle here that got lit up.

I have seen some real good pictures of some real crappy cattle on here that got lit up.

What I haven't seen are too many pictures of real good cattle good or bad that got lit up.

Having said that I have posted pictures of a real nice bull calf that was chosen to sell second in one of the best sales in Colorado a couple of years ago. One person (from another country) came on and tore him up real bad. a couple thought he was just adequate and several liked him.


If you can't take criticism then don't post your pictures....

If you think that there aren't some 20 cow outfits in this country putting out some real good cattle look up Bob Hart a Gelbvieh breeder from Missouri. You might have to eat your words.

I said the way they were standing in the pictures got ate up, not the cattle. Do I have some animals that aren't "perfect", hell yes. Do they raise a good calf every year, do it with minimal inputs, and not cause undo stress? If they didn't do any of the above I wouldn't have them.

Grow some balls and some thicker skin. You post a pic you're asking for comments. Put your daugher on here and probably not everybody will think she's drop dead beautiful either. Could just be a bad pic and then it could be she's just ugly. A lot of small operators on here who have forgotten more than some of the big boys. They stay small for a reason. They're probably making more money than any of us. :nod: What works in your world might not even survive down here so get over it. And you're right. Those bulls might improve your calf crop from those angus tremendously. Post some pics of them and let everybody "lite'em up".

When I walk out of the sale barn on sale day I usually don't wish I could have done something different. The same guys have been buying my cattle for years, so my cows must be doing something right. I have no doubt my cattle would not due well down south. I never said those bulls would improve my herd, I said I would use them. Just bought these 2 off of the Rocking Chair Ranch in Ft. McKavett TX. Both are 16 months old. I will be be turning them out on Brangus mommas in April.

I did notice that you did not request opinions and or evaluations of your bulls. :cboy:

No, Brangus are home polled.

On a side note- it amazes me how many people will turn down a superior bull bc their horned instead of polled. Imo, its the worst type of single trait selection. EDehorning takes seconds.

The bulls look good to me. Anything showing bloom or being heavy muscled coming out of ft mckavit should throw up serious flags. They might have had a ft of rain in the last Cpl years.

Yep, I knew that, just was curious about the original post and whether an evaluation was requested.

By the same token posting pics on this site is in and of itself an invitation as this is what the site is about.

So if one is really not prepared for critical evaluation probably best not to post photos.

That being said teh ugly baby comment was good. :D
