I have a 6' Howse shredder a few years old. It's in near-new shape and cuts great. However, I must have gotten some wire around it or something, because the lower seal is blown. When I pour gear oil into it, it just runs right through.
No way I can fix this thing by myself. The local tractor dealerships say they could probably fix it, but it's hard to say what it would cost. Getting that blade carrier off is a b**** of a job that can take hours. I just don't have the tools or the muscle.
Meanwhile, it seems to work fine. I can pour some lube into it and get the gears wet, then go cut 10 acres with no problems. I'm scared it's going to fry, though, then I'll really be stuck.
Is there a "cheat" or something I can use? Maybe stuff the gearbox with mayonnaise or bananas, whatever it takes. A tip would be profoundly appreciated.
